Well, one obvious issue is that your input record is incorrectly coded. 
  A book shouldn't have a part element.  That doesn't explain everything 
of course (you certainly shouldn't lose the title), and you'll have to 
wait for Markus to give a fuller example.

Markus, is there no way for the DTD to control this stuff?
