This is a good question. I personally do not have any experience with non-standard character sets, but the limiting step is basically the storage in the SQL database. Recent versions of MySQL allow to select the character set (per server, afaik). Information about supported character sets is available in the MySQL handbook at www.mysql.com. It would be great if you could test the setup with your specific language needs and see whether refdb adds any unnecessary constraints.
