could you please confirm that "skip-networking" is active in a default
MySQL install on Debian? In other words, I'd like to be sure that you
didn't switch it on yourselves.

I just checked my.cnf of my mysql-server 3.22.32-3 package (not the
freshest one, I concede). This one does not have the skip-networking
entry. Maybe the option didn't even exist in 3.22., so this is a
potential problem that could screw up installs on newer systems.
