Thanks for your comments. To be honest, I'm not sure what to do here.
I believe this issue was likely fixed by PCRE 6.5 (released in Feb
2006). According to:
this would mean that PHP 5.2 and above and 4.4.7 are likely to work
with the bundled versions of the PCRE library. It is also possible for
PHP to use non-bundled PCRE versions and we have been able to point to
refbase running on some of these older versions of PHP.
Perhaps we should have a footnote recommending modern versions or
specify the minimum PCRE library we'd like?
