+Recqual is collection of scripts using Asterisk and other
+Linux utilities to measure call quality on an automated
+basis.
+
+-How it Works-
+Recqual was designed to detect audio quality problems in a call
+path that may not be visible from the technology being used
+locally. Whether it's SIP, ZAP, or IAX the fact is there are
+many potential sources of call quality problems in just about
+any call being made. Often times a SIP "provider" may resell
+services, for example. While the delivery of IP packets to/from
+this provider may look excellent there may be other problems
+upstream that an analysis of the IP packets, path, etc may not
+be able to detect.
+
+In scenarios such as this the only way to identify call quality
+problems is to analyze the audio itself. Regardless of method
+or transport being used, the goal of any telephony system is to
+deliver reliable, consistent call quality.
+
+Recqual is designed to allow you to place a large number of
+automated calls (using Asterisk) using different call scenario
+files.
+
+The key here is consistency. When Asterisk places the outbound
+call (and answers the inbound call) it will generate a set of
+tones while recording the return audio path. Once the run has
+finished Ecasound will run with various filters and noise gates
+to detect certain amounts of distortion, signal loss, etc.
+
+Calls either pass or fail based on how much variation there is
+in the audio once it has been returned. Of course you can pass
+audio through any combination of networks - including the PSTN.
+
+Almost any "call quality" problem(s) can be detected with this
+method. Whether it's one way calls, echo, dropped packets,
+distortion, etc ecasound should be able to isolate the problem
+calls. If not you can just tweak the script ;).
+
+Only calls that fail are saved. These files can be imported
+into your favorite audio processing utility and/or run through
+Ecasound again if you'd like to tweak the process script to
+detect them automatically.
+
+Recqual has been designed (and optimized) to work with SIP
+channels. For example, it has the ability to correlate problem
+calls with specific RTP endpoint IP addresses. However, due to
+the protocol independent nature of Asterisk you can use just
+about any channel type with a few simple changes.
+
+-Requirements-
+- Unique path for outbound calls (SIP provider, for example)
+- Unique path for inbound calls (PRI, for example)
+- Lightly loaded Asterisk system (1.4 or later, please)
+- Ecasound 2.5.2 (or later): http://ecasound.seul.org/ecasound/
+- wav2png for web reports
+- Enough patience to deal with crappy documentation (for now)
+
+-Getting Started-
+
+1) If you are using SIP and would like to identify RTP endpoints
+you will need to be able to patch and compile (or re-compile)
+Asterisk.
+
+Apply the .patch file from the asterisk directory in this
+distribution.
+
+Compile and install Asterisk as usual.
+
+2) Download, compile, and install Ecasound. You can also install it
+from a distro specific package manager but I like to compile it from
+scratch. Get it here:
+

+3) (Optional) Use tmpfs for the Asterisk monitor directory. Add this
+line to fstab:
+
+none /var/spool/asterisk/monitor tmpfs defaults 0 0

+Just to make sure that dir is empty and run (as root):

+mount /var/spool/asterisk/monitor
+
+4) Place the contents of the recqual tarball into /usr/local/recqual
+No other paths will work, recqual is practically alpha afterall...
+
+5) Copy/symlink the .conf files from the asterisk dir in this tarball
+to /etc/asterisk (or wherever the Asterisk configs are on your system).
+
+6) Tweak sip.conf to meet your needs. Check other channel drivers for
+other potential call paths. Make sure to send me your changes! ;)
+
+7) Reload/restart Asterisk.
+
+8) Tweak sample.sen
+
+9) Look over recqual.conf
+
+10) Run "./gencall ./sample.sen" and hope it doesn't blow up. ;)
+
+11) Keep copying and tweaking sample.sen until you can identify trouble
+codecs, providers, RTP endpoints, destination numbers, etc.
+
+-Limitations (TODO)-

+The clock was ticking, customers were complaining and I just needed my
+evidence. I didn't have much time for polish and I came up with this
+over a couple of days.

+
+- Needs dedicated Asterisk system
+- Only once scenario can run at a time
+- The final "pass" is done on file size. We need a more exact method.
+- Lack of central configuration
+- Script syntax, sloppiness
+- Documentation
+- Ecasound parameters. I'm sure these could be tweaked further.
+- Verify operation (and theory) across a variety of codecs, channels, etc
+- Don't require root (I guess we don't do now, technically)
+- Many, many, more
+
+As always, any comments, suggestions, improvements, flames can be sent

+Recqual is collection of scripts using Asterisk and other
+Linux utilities to measure call quality on an automated
+basis.
+
+-How it Works-
+Recqual was designed to detect audio quality problems in a call
+path that may not be visible from the technology being used
+locally. Whether it's SIP, ZAP, or IAX the fact is there are
+many potential sources of call quality problems in just about
+any call being made. Often times a SIP "provider" may resell
+services, for example. While the delivery of IP packets to/from
+this provider may look excellent there may be other problems
+upstream that an analysis of the IP packets, path, etc may not
+be able to detect.

+In scenarios such as this the only way to identify call quality
+problems is to analyze the audio itself. Regardless of method
+or transport being used, the goal of any telephony system is to
+deliver reliable, consistent call quality.
+
+Recqual is designed to allow you to place a large number of
+automated calls (using Asterisk) using different call scenario
+files.
+
+The key here is consistency. When Asterisk places the outbound
+call (and answers the inbound call) it will generate a set of
+tones while recording the return audio path. Once the run has
+finished Ecasound will run with various filters and noise gates
+to detect certain amounts of distortion, signal loss, etc.

+Calls either pass or fail based on how much variation there is
+in the audio once it has been returned. Of course you can pass
+audio through any combination of networks - including the PSTN.
+
+Almost any "call quality" problem(s) can be detected with this
+method. Whether it's one way calls, echo, dropped packets,
+distortion, etc ecasound should be able to isolate the problem
+calls. If not you can just tweak the script ;).
+
+Only calls that fail are saved. These files can be imported
+into your favorite audio processing utility and/or run through
+Ecasound again if you'd like to tweak the process script to
+detect them automatically.
+
+Recqual has been designed (and optimized) to work with SIP
+channels. For example, it has the ability to correlate problem
+calls with specific RTP endpoint IP addresses. However, due to
+the protocol independent nature of Asterisk you can use just
+about any channel type with a few simple changes.
+
+-Requirements-
+- Unique path for outbound calls (SIP provider, for example)
+- Unique path for inbound calls (PRI, for example)
+- Lightly loaded Asterisk system (1.4 or later, please)
+- Ecasound 2.5.2 (or later): http://ecasound.seul.org/ecasound/

+- Enough patience to deal with crappy documentation (for now)

+-Getting Started-
+
+1) If you are using SIP and would like to identify RTP endpoints
+you will need to be able to patch and compile (or re-compile)
+Asterisk.
+
+Apply the .patch file from the asterisk directory in this
+distribution.
+
+Compile and install Asterisk as usual.
+
+2) Download, compile, and install Ecasound. You can also install it
+from a distro specific package manager but I like to compile it from
+scratch. Get it here:
+

+3) (Optional) Use tmpfs for the Asterisk monitor directory. Add this
+line to fstab:
+
+none /var/spool/asterisk/monitor tmpfs defaults 0 0

+Just to make sure that dir is empty and run (as root):

+mount /var/spool/asterisk/monitor
+
+4) Place the contents of the recqual tarball into /usr/local/recqual
+No other paths will work, recqual is practically alpha afterall...
+
+5) Copy/symlink the .conf files from the asterisk dir in this tarball
+to /etc/asterisk (or wherever the Asterisk configs are on your system).
+
+6) Tweak sip.conf to meet your needs. Check other channel drivers for
+other potential call paths. Make sure to send me your changes! ;)
+
+7) Reload/restart Asterisk.
+
+8) Tweak sample.sen
+
+9) Look over recqual.conf
+
+10) Run "./gencall ./sample.sen" and hope it doesn't blow up. ;)
+
+11) Keep copying and tweaking sample.sen until you can identify trouble
+codecs, providers, RTP endpoints, destination numbers, etc.

+evidence. I didn't have much time for polish and I came up with this

+
+- Needs dedicated Asterisk system
+- Only once scenario can run at a time
+- The final "pass" is done on file size. We need a more exact method.
+- Lack of central configuration
+- Script syntax, sloppiness
+- Documentation
+- Ecasound parameters. I'm sure these could be tweaked further.
+- Verify operation (and theory) across a variety of codecs, channels, etc
+- Don't require root (I guess we don't do now, technically)
+- Many, many, more
+
