Did you only use libmagic[1] (through the file command or otherwise) or some additional method? As Poitr wrote, the method used by libmagic (as well as by glib or any other utility depending on the Shared MIME Info database[2]) is somewhat limited. There is another library called GNU Libextractor[3] which support custom methods for file identification and meta data extraction. It enables taking file size in account and read meta data stored in the end of the file, and as well as doing more advanced analysis. (However I find the implementation of this library a bit flawed and I'm thinking about writing a replacement.) For more advanced file identification and meta data extractions there are also tools geared towards data forensics and digital archaeology. I don't know much about the commercial ones, but one called Droid[4] is free. Note that Droid uses a more fine grained classification system called Pronom[5] which differentiates variants and versions of a format as well. I am myself very interested in making up MIME types to all these formats (which I have already begun doing[6]), and provide methods for identifying them then possible. If you want to do the same, please consider the following: It is okay for one format to have more than one MIME type (aliases). But it's NOT okay for more than one format to have the same MIME type. Therefore short ambiguous MIME types should be avoided. It's an especially bad idea to just use the common extension to form a MIME type. There are for example quite a few image formats with the extension .img. They all need to have their own unique MIME type. And for more obscure formats it's better to have really verbose strings than risking collision. Before coming up with a name for a format it might be a good idea to consult the database of Archive Team[7]. Otherwise try to find out the original name of the format, the original software using it or at least the company or person behind it. See the somewhat outdated instructions in the "INSTALL" file. The plugin source code is now compatible with ImageMagick 7, but the Makefile might need some adjustments. Hi, In today's release: • dozens of new formats (mostly C64) • improvements to already supported formats (color fixes, compressed variants) • "Share as PNG" and "Save as PNG" on Android Download from http://recoil.sourceforge.net/ or Android and Windows stores. Interestingly, the Windows store has a limit of 500 associated file extensions per app which RECOIL now surpassed with 501 file extensions. Hi, Yesterday I released RECOIL 6.1.1 with these changes: • New Atari 8-bit formats: Mad Studio (AN2, AN4, AN5, TL4), Zoom-4 graphics editor (ZM4) • Improved formats: MSX Screen 4 (SC4), Amiga icon (INFO), Mad Studio (GR1, GR2, MPL) • Notarized the macOS package - this is a procedure of sending the package to Apple for verification, required on new macOSes Download from http://recoil.sourceforge.net, the Android store and the Windows 10 store. I'm looking for the ability to view/convert c64/Geos and/or Amiga fonts. atari8.fnt, c64.fnt and zx81.fnt are part of RECOIL’s source code, so they are crafted in a way that is handy to be used from code rather than in a standard format that existed on these platforms. Only atari8.fnt happens to be standard Atari 8-bit format. amiga.fnt is a sample file of Atari ST 8x16 font format. Someone called it “Amiga”. Obviously it’s not an original Amiga font because it includes the Atari logo.
