reacTIVision != reacTable

    Dear reacTIVision users,
I want to clarify again a common misunderstanding:

the reacTIVision open source project is not about the reacTable, but it provides a simple software infrastructure for the easy construction of table-based tangible user interfaces - just like the reacTable.

The reacTable project is of course using reacTIVision as its sensor component, but there is more software (connection logic, synthesizer, graphics) needed for the full instrument. The reacTable is still under active development, which means that we constantly add and change features as the instrument evolves, and therefore the software is not ready at all for the average user. Once we consider the instrument finished a certain stage, we will eventually release the whole software package. But don't expect that to happen anytime soon!

Since we are commited to open source software and free knowledge we provide you with all the tools and documentation you need to build your own table interfaces. But I hope you all understand, that we cannot release the full reacTable software at the moment.

    best,
    Martin.K

could you be more clear than the post above, like what parts on the reactivision are missing? i think that the projector part is missing but that is only my opinion from what i could get reading your pages, so the visual feedback is going to be released too?

      Well,
there is nothing missing with reacTIVision itself, apart from a few bug fixes and a more user friendly interface.
Regarding the visiual feedback you can use any of the provided example clients, such as TUIO_JAVA, which is already drawing some basic visual response to the received events. The rest is up to you, as an application developer.

      best,
      Martin.K

Is there a time line for a full reacTable release(s)?  I am curious as I don't want to reinvent the wheel as an application developer.  Is there plan for commericial release or open source rollout.

sorry i meant reactable when said reactivision, so let me reformulate, reactivision is itself complete, this i understood, but now from me going to reactivision to make a self reactable with a projector and the tangible fiducials, pretty much like those demos on youtube, i dont know if those are supposed to be there, but there is where i saw, btw really nice demos, so this is the question , what should i do alone that you are not planning to release, and what things should we wait for you to release? sorry if i am being a little boring asking these questions, but your music instrument is really nice and just like someone learned from other how to make a violin, or a piano, i would like to learn from you how to make such one as reactable, if you dont like this idea, let me know and i can stop trying doing so, i will respect your plans for it.

couldnt you release a minimal version of the reactable software? what language is used on reactable only soft? do you use pd to make sound on the reactable? im willing to use it, i got it to work using the java generic and puredata to recieve, but i dont have even a minimal idea on how to project it onto a table, could you guys be more opened regarding the projection itself?

      Hello again,
I think my first post fully explains the current situation. the reacTable itself has been well documented in the various publications that are available on our web page, while its core software is not available to the public.
we cannot release the instrument software in its current state, neither a "minimal version" since supporting this only would generate a significant workload for the team, where we currently do not have the resources for such a project.

the reacTable development is still in progress, you could say along with the previous image used that we still didn't decide how many keys our piano will have and what material we will use for the violin strings. and after all, the bow is only half finished ...

there is no time-line set for the finalization nor its publication.
please have a look at the other threads for technical questions regarding the software we used and the projection issues.

Thanks for the time line answer.  The component you've released so far is excellent and very easy to use and implement.  Have you thought of allowing another 'team' to work and support the other components?  Anyhow, I look forward to working with what you've released so far.  Great job.

man i finally found all the papers publicated on the publications menu, i will dig it out and see what can i do, btw thanks for the responses and of course thanks a lot for reactvision, its a real advance in how we will be doing things with the computer in a not so far future i think.
