The regex filter function calls preg_match - but unfortunately
this does not work for multibyte character sets such as UTF-8.
Would it be possible to use the mb_ereg* functions if the mbstring
extension is available? Or alternatively, allow for some sort of
callback mechanism so that the user deals with the whole regex thing.
