Using rdesktop 1.1 under Solaris 8 to connect to a
Windows 2000 Server, I get strange behavior when I look
at a text document in outlook, notepad, and internet
explorer (so far) if there are a large number of leading
spaces (20 or more). The text does not render properly
and will change as I highlight/de-highlight it. It does not
have this behavior on a Windows NT4 TS server or when
I view the same document using VNC on the Windows
2000 Server.

    Have you tried 1.2beta1?

I had this same problem with 1.2.0 on RH8 and RH9 connecting
    to Windows 2000 Server.

To elaborate more -- if you display something in Windows
Notepad in any font (mine is set to Andale Mono right now),
and on some dialog boxes (especially setup programs and
shareware for some reason), you will not see any text at all
in some dialog box fields until you take your cursor and
highlight it. In some source code editing programs, it's a
little dangerous, too, because you might not notice that
there's code on a line until you highlight the line.
However, if you use Wordpad to open some text files, it
doesn't exhibit the same behavior. I think the problem comes
down to how rdesktop is handling Windows' window messaging
    engine calls.

HOWEVER!!! (good news) I found the very strange solution:

    1. Go to command line and cd to wherever you have downloaded
1.2.0 and expanded the source to do a make/config/install. I
assume already that you have done the make config install
    thing to get this setup.

    2. While at command line and cd'd to the directory where you
expanded the source, now run your rdesktop command like you
normally do to the server. For some reason, this works. I
found, however, that if you are in say, /home/myuser and you
do /home/myuser/apps/rdesktop/rdesktop, it's not running the
same as cd'ing to /home/myuser/apps/rdesktop and running the
    rdesktop command from there.

BTW, just for evidence of what I'm doing when it works,
here's what my command line says once I'm in
/home/myuser/apps/rdesktop directory (where I expanded the
source files and did the make-config-install):

    ./rdesktop -u myuser -d mydomain -g 1024x768 -T MYSERVERNAME
    10.10.10.1

Notice that I didn't have to use the -b switch.

I have no clue why this works, but it works consistently.
Can anyone validate and/or explain why this is true?

Bad news. I thought my theory in my previous post
(2003-09-16 15:37, ipalmetto) was correct, but this morning
after I rebooted and tried rdesktop at command line from my
source directory again, stuff shows up blank in Notepad
unless I highlight it by doing CTRL+A. It appears that this
issue is intermittent with 1.2.0. I just don't understand it.

I have similar issues under Ubuntu(warty). rdesktop connects
to a Win2003 system with no problems. In Notepad, the
    following occurs:

-a previously opened notepad document will appear blank
until I wave the cursor around in the document. Wherever I
wave the cursor, text appears. Note I am NOT selecting text:
simply waving the cursor around without pressing any mouse
    button!
-In the same document, any text I type does not appear
unless I wave cursor over it. If I overtype existing text,
no change appears to have been made until I wave cursor over
it - at which point whatever text I overtyped magically appears!
-Another way to get text to appear is minimize the rdesktop
window, then maximize it again. Appears to refresh the
entire screen. However anything I type in Notepad will not
appear till I wave mouse or min/max the screen again.

This behaviour is true if I run rdesktop within the tsclient
frontend or direct from commandline. Is also true if I run
rdesktop from commandline in rdesktop's 'home' directory,
however I have not tried the make|config tricks mentioned in
the report above this one. Is true if the target system is
Win2000(SP4), WinXP (SP2) or Win2003. Is true against all
these platforms using both RDPv4 and RDPv5. On all
platforms, Wordpad worked fine. Didn't test other apps.

OOPS, I forgot to mention that all this is happening under
    rdesktop version 1.3.1

Pardon me if this is a double post - appears my last submit
didn't 'take'. Anyway I forgot to mention in my 2005-02-01
13:06 post that all those symptoms occurred while running
rdesktop version 1.3.1 as found in Ubuntu(warty).
