RDesktop 1.5.0 occasionally seems to lock up when connected to Vista (RTM/Final). It usually occurs when a large video update is performed, and often it seems to freeze half way drawing a new complicated window. The cursor still moves, however no input is passed to Vista, and nothing is updated on the rdesktop side. I can generally recreate within 15-30 minutes of using RDesktop and Vista, and a restart of RDesktop is the current workaround. Vista is running with all visual options off in favour of performance.

I would like to add, I am fairly certain these 'freezes' occur less likely on a more reliable connection. i.e. 802.11g wlan it freezes roughly every 15-30 minutes; however over FastE its fairly rare. To clarify, same laptop connecting to the same desktop worked flawlessly until the desktop was upgraded to Vista from XP sp2 ;)

I see think problem too. I think it's a Vista networking problem. If I bounce the connection off an XP box, it's all good. Still tssting....

Hello. Has anyone found a resolution to this problem? I am running Ubuntu Edgy on my laptop, connecting via wireless to the Windows Vista Ultimate RTM box. The screen refreshes freeze so often that it makes it unusable via RDESKTOP. I will try connecting directory via ethernet to see if it is network latency related and report back what I find.

Several observations based on some tests:
-These freezes consistently last 30 seconds for me.
-During the freeze, no data is sent from the server. (It's hanging in the ui_select call.) After the freeze, the client appears to receive everything that should have been sent during that time.)

    Hi!

is there likely to be a solution to this anytime soon? RDesktop is currently unusuable with Vista, as it stands, which is a big pity.

    Thanks!

Hello, just another acknowledge to this problem. Happens randomly during rdesktop session. Even more, connection with Vista sometimes goes down during the pause.

The problem is that on graphical updates for some reason it pauses. If you keep sending mouse clicks or "special keys" it will eventually come out of it.. this usually takes anywhere from 20-60seconds, but will happen again within the next 5-10 mins.. Web pages that have "updating" screens like video windows or constantly updating ad's seem to cause it to happen more often. another thing that seems to have an effect is the pop-up hints when you leave your mouse on something too long. Was actually hoping that it was cause by some kind of compiler option mistake.

fyi, running on Ubuntu Gutsy, I compiled from CVS and saw a big improvement over the stock gutsy rdesktop 1.5 (which was freezing every ~5 minutes)

no more freezes for me with CVS build

I'm too seeing these freezes over a fast WLAN connection.

Every minute or so rdesktop CVS and 1.5 freezes the session for 30 seconds or longer. This must be an rdesktop issue because the same connection from Vista's RDP client is flawless.

Perhaps the problem is due to the fact rdesktop only supports the RDP 5.0 protocol, whereas Vista uses RDP 6.0 with backwards compatability?

I'm not a C/C++ coder so I couldn't do anything to fix this myself. But I'd say this is a critical issue because Vista and Server 2008 will is replacing XP and Server 2003.
