This is probably caused by all the table elements on the page. You should try converting their plain-text site instead: http://www.christiansciencemonitor.com/cgi-bin/redirect.pl?textEdition That should look a lot better. ..wayne.. |

I downloaded the fix, and it works like a champ - thanks. Now, I have a question. When I convert a web site such as the Christian Science Monitor, when I import it into my ebook, some of the formatting is such that the text for paragraphs starts at the far right edge of the screen (so that there might be but one or two words on a line). Is this something I can fix with one of the rbmake command line switches? I tried the -Ts (simple formatting), but that didn't seem to work. I'm not sure what other switches might have an effect on it. Or is that just something I need to live with? Thanks for the bug fix and thanks for writing rbmake. I think it happens when there are failures in the fetched pages -- I should hopefully have time to investigate this soon. In the meantime, you can work around the problem by excluding pages from being fetched. I recommend creating an option file and editing it. Start by running the above command with the -d option, and redirect the output to a file: rbmake -d -f1 -jio csm-depth1 http://www.christiansciencemonitor.com >csm.opt Then, edit it and add these lines: Exclude-URLs-Matching: */event.ng* Exclude-URLs-Matching: */message.asp* Exclude-URLs-Matching: */spidertest* At this point you can run this command to grab the CSM content: rbmake -l csm.opt Hopefully that will work for you. ..wayne.. |

Hi, First off, I want to say that rbmake is a very exciting find for me. I've recently purchased an RCA eBook 1100 from Ebay and was thrilled to find rbmake. Initially, I downloaded the 1.0 binaries. I was experiencing problems with rbmake crashing when I used 1.0. I thought I would try to build 1.1 (can't seem to find 1.1 binaries to download), to see if it solved the problems. After several iterations, I was able to get rbmake to build with image support. Now, 1.1 doesn't seem to crash for the most part. However, it is producing some rb files that my ebook doesn't like (and cannot read). I am trying to convert the Christian Science Monitor web site using this command: rbmake -f1 -jio csm-depth1 http://www.christiansciencemonitor.com <http://www.christiansciencemonitor.com/> It cranks away, seeming to succeed and produces a file csm-depth1.rb. When I import this file into my ebook, it cannot read it. If I change the command to not follow links (removing the -f1) then it works, but there isn't much content because it's just the front page of the site. I am running this on Windows XP - building under cygwin. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve |

Hello list, I've just subscribed and I hope this project is still active! I'm in generating course materials in ebook format, I've been teaching at Anne Arundel Community College for over 20 years and would like to support students with ebook 1150 devices. I'm totally ignorant about the format spec and also how I'd get the file into the ebook after generating it properly. I'd be very happy if anyone would point me a the direction to find this kind of information. Dick S. |

I haven't fiddled with Gutenberg texts much yet, but you should try using the -Ts option for simple-text formatting. Rbmake's default is -Tp (preformatted), which will look ugly for hard-CR text files. This "simple" (-Ts) mode expects paragraphs to have an empty line between them, so it should work fairly well with these books. Another alternative is to transform the book into an HTML file. There are some filter tools available that turn Gutenberg texts into HTML, such as this one: http://www.sandroid.org/GutenMark/ There is also at least one site that transforms the texts into XHTML/XML and makes the results available for download. Here's the one I know about: http://gutenberg.hwg.org/ ..wayne.. |

Okay, I had a chance to work with it. I was not able to get an rb file off of the web site. I even copied your command line to a bat file and it would create a book but not the images. I was able to make it work by coping the web site page for Matthew 1 and renamed the subordinate image directory from Matthew 1_files to Mattew1_files, update the html and everything worked fine. I guess the space must have caused the problem. It all may be a moot point though, the images are too large for the rocket book to show them completely. I get the scroll arrows which just makes it too cumbersome to read. I tried reducing the image size to a 315 pixel width and they just became too small to read. I guess what I need is text that is imaged by words instead of phrase. In any case, I like the control of rbmake a lot better than the RocketLibrarian. Good Job! Just put a -D at the start of the command-line and it will output an options file to stdout. If you like the options file format, you can save it off (using redirection) and then load the file instead of typing command-line options (e.g. rbmake -l my.opt). > here I get this message when I select the [Image] link on my Rocket > eBook after I load the page: The images are imagemaps, which rbmake doesn't know how to process (handling them would require an artificial intelligence "looking" at the image and figuring out where all the interesting spots to click are -- in this case figuring out that the image is made up of words and that it is possible to click on each word separately). I first tried this command to create an entire NT: rbmake -pif1 -oGreekNT -m'http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~fisher/cgi-bin/*' http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~fisher/gnt/chapters.html Here we've told rbmake to start on the chapters page, to descend only 1 link down from this page, and to allow references to the cgi-bin dir that is not a part of the tree where we started. This gives me a book that has 261 pages and 499 images, which would have been more if we hadn't run into the default table-of-contents size-limit (there were 7458 images excluded). So, trying to get the whole NT in one book will be too big for the rocket. Let's try getting just Matthew: rbmake -pif1 -N1024 -oMatthew -m'http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~fisher/cgi-bin/gnt?id=01*' http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~fisher/gnt/chapters.html Here we upped the maximum number of files we can include using the -N option and limited the links followed to just the Matthew pages (by extending the URL in the -m option). This appears to have worked great (but I didn't try to get the rocket to display it -- I looked at the 2MB book manually). If you go this route, you'll probably want to edit the start page down to just mention the book(s) that you're including. I hope this helps. ..wayne.. |

Wayne, Thanks, for the help to following are to commands I am using For the local web page I constructed I used rbmake -pfyi -oMatthew "C:\My Documents\ebooks\greek bible\Matthew.htm" the images are located in a C:\My Documents\ebooks\greek bible\Matthew.htm\Matthew 1_files I have tried referencing the images by the C: path and relative path (/Mathew1_files/image.gif), neither work. however both work fine in IE 5.5 For the URL I used the command rbmake -pfyi -oMatthewH http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~fisher/cgi-bin/gnt?id=0101 here I get this message when I select the [Image] link on my Rocket eBook after I load the page: Usage error! I am trying to create a RB book from a web site that is exclusively images of Greek text.
