Whiile pursuing another issue I found that rsyslog was printing an advisory message roughly every 3mins. Checking the /etc/rsyslog.conf at the end of the file is a rule that sends every trivial message to /dev/xconsole. The conf file has this message just before the offending rule NOTE: adjust the list below, or you'll go crazy if you have a reasonably busy site... Looking around other forums it seems that this has been causing problems for many people. Easily fixed, just comment out the last 4 lines and reboot. I think it would be helpful to include this info in the documentation

It's an old known problem of the Debian Jessie distro, probably the same on all platforms. I hope it will finally get fixed in the next Debian release.
