Google, Sun to Challenge Microsoft With OpenOffice (Update2)

Oct. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Google Inc., the world's most-used Internet search engine, and Sun Microsystems Inc. will jointly offer online word processing and spreadsheet functions in a direct challenge to Microsoft Corp.'s Office products.

Google will promote and distribute Sun's OpenOffice software for personal computers, the companies said in a statement today. They also will explore other areas for collaboration under a multiyear agreement.
