Sorry for the off-topic reply (though the NoMapMode seems like a very good option to me also), but I haven't seen anything regarding 1889 support in Rails, though you mention it in your post. I am running the latest release. Is 1889 support in development and hidden without a flag or something? Or is it only in cvs/svn right now?
