    Hello,

I liked RadiusDesk so much great product but i couldn't get it worked with dd-wrt and chillispot. I installed RadiusDesk in a cloud server and you know chillispot comes with dd-wrt. Can you please help me setting up my router and RadiusDesk?

  • Dirk van der Walt

    Hi,

What manufacturer and model router do you have?

I might want to interest you to use MESHdesk rather than DD-Wrt.(http://www.radiusdesk.com/meshdesk_user_guide). It is based on OpenWrt.

The problem with DD-WRT is that it is still using (last time I checked) Chillispot which does not include some of the cool features of CoovaChilli thus leaving you with an ancient Captive Portal which feels old in may ways.

If you use MESHdesk you can have up to four captive portals running on your one router and also have the advantage that it is easy to expand upon (should you want to expand the coverage) and centrally managed.

    Kind regards.

    Hi dvdwalt,

Thank you for your quick answer. I have TP-LINK's TL-WR 841ND. I'm trying MESHdesk now. I'll write the result.

    Hi,

That's weird, which version do you have? I've got my V9.0 device just a day or so ago and got it flashed in no time.

In fact I love this device and the price so much I'm doing a writeup on it:
    http://www.radiusdesk.com/user_guide/md_tplink_wr841

Remember it will not listen on 192.168.1.1 BUT will become a DHCP client (it will also set itself up on 192.168.255.200 and try to contact the MESHdesk Node Config Utility which it expects to find on 192.168.255.20)

    http://www.radiusdesk.com/user_guide/md_firmware

Yes the 4MB is to little to install the stock OpenWrt with its packages. I had to make the firmware lean in order to be below 4M, but those you download should work without a problem.

BTW: The latest SVN and versions of the node config utility and firmware now included the WR841N devices in the hardware selection. (This will ensure the LEDs work as intended)

Let us know if you are making progress.

    Kind regards

    Just as another FYI

I've just tried the Debrick without serial for V9 to flash the very latest MESHdesk firmware on and that also worked as advertized. This device is really shining.

    Cheers

    Hi Dirk,

I've got V9 and I love this device too, I used the same method as you said but now I think firmware did not bricked the device :) I thought it should have listened 192.168.1.1 and when I couldn't telnet or ssh, I instaled stock firmware.

Actually I'm tring to make my own simple hotspot. As I said before I installed RADIUSDesk on a cloud server and now the router is running OpenWrt with coova-chilli.I followed your tutorial

    http://www.radiusdesk.com/user_guide/chilli/ubiquity_basic

but when I connect to wifi and open up a browser I can access the web directly. I just want to show a simple page with terms and conditions./etc/init.d/chilli and /etc/chilli/config files are the same as in the tutorial. The only difference is RADIUSDesk is not on a local machine. Is there a problem with NAS devices?

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,

I suggest you work through these documents in order to gain a better understanding of the MESHdesk firmware and how it fits together.

    http://www.radiusdesk.com/meshdesk_user_guide

Most steps are now automated and / or centrally managed when compared to the URL for the Ubiquity you followed.

The simplest will be to just add your node to the existing Cheetah mesh which comes with the default install of RADIUSdesk.

The only change you will have to make is to edit the captive portal exit point and specify your server's IP address. (Remember to re-attach Cheetah Guest during the edit process)

Once you get a feel for this the subsequent mesh networks should be a snap to do.

    Kind regards

    Hello again Dirk,

I read the documents watched your videos on youtube. I have a modem and router connected to it. I installed MESHdesk firmware on WR841N which is connected to modem, added device as a node with your MESHdesk Node config utility and added router as NAS device. I can't see wifi connections as in your "MESHdesk - 1 mesh with 3 captive portals" video. What do I have to do to achieve that ?

  • Dirk van der Walt

    Hi,

You have to add it in two places. If you added the router as a NAS device, that is only the first place.

In order for the router to be automatically configured and set-up you have to use the MESHdesk applet.

There are three sample networks. I suggest you start with the most simple one called Meerkat and progress to the more complex ones over time.

    • Meerkat will simply bridge the WR841N with your LAN (Meerkat Wifi)
    • Cheetah will provide something similar to OpenMesh.com's setup where you have one captive portal and one WPA2 Shared key protected network (Cheetah guest and Cheetah wireless)
    • Lion is the most complex will provide three captive portals and one WPA2 Shared key protected network.

Each time you can simply delete the node from the one network and add it to the next. Reboot the router and the new settings should be applied.

Start with Meerkat and let us know what the results are. Once you are up and running we can move on.

    Regards

I did an svn update to get the WR841N in my drop down, and it didn't seem to work. It isn't in my pull down option for mesh, do I need to so something different?

    Hi John,

Not sure about your setup there since the root path seems a bit new to me (/var/www/meshdesk)

You need to update RADIUSdesk as per instruction here:

    http://www.radiusdesk.com/getting_started/update_ubuntu_nginx

The code you checked out is just the code used to build the firmware (which is already built for you and available under the Files folder to the RADIUSdesk project on Sourceforge.)

There are also the parts which comes with RADIUSdesk (the GUI part) and then the MESHdesk node config utility.

    Hi Dirk,

MESHdesk and RADIUSdesk are working with captive portal. I realized how awesome they are when I saw them working. Thank you very much for your help and great products.

    High Five!!

    Nice,

Yes they go very well together. I'm glad you like them and are willing to test them out.

I'm actually busy uploading a new VM which include the 841 in the list of hardware at the moment. Seems more and more are showing interest in using both recently.

    Cheers

Hi Dirk. I am stuck :)
I successfully installed rd on ubuntu 14.04. with single eth (public IP)
Now, I can't find the precise procedure to pair a WDR3600 as hotspot.
    I'll try to explain:

We are a public library. We have 8 different locations. I need to setup 8 TP-LINK WDR3600. One for each location. Now... we need to connect these AP's to RD and set personalised landing page for each.

WI_FI will be unsecured but on connect... students will be redirected to a login page.

Please excuse my english and thank you for your work and help !

      Hi,
follow this guide to flash firmware http://www.radiusdesk.com/user_guide/md_firmware and then read http://www.radiusdesk.com/user_guide/md_firmware and then follow this video to configure meshdesk and radiusdesk https://youtu.be/Z0is6Nh5NfI. You need one realm but 8 nas and 8 dynamic pages each with the different photos and details for each library. The whole thing is less complicated than setting up the server

      Hi Andrei,

Are these locations geographically far away from each other?

If I understand correct you basically will be using the 3600's just as a single hotspot with no need for mesh?

I flashed the firmware but my WDR3600 keeps restarting. Link for youtube does not work.

  • Dirk van der Walt

    Hi Andrei,

Have you pointed the unit to your server using this utility?

With MESHdesk Node config utility I cannot pair the WDR3600 to server
I can't find a step by step tutorial. How to do this ?

    OK,

Yes, we are in a sort of transition right now. I see you did install the latest SVN, so I'll upload a Chaos Calmet build of the firmware for you in the next couple of hours which you can then use to re-flash those 3600's

This should allow you to choose and configure them.

    Will keep you posted.

I''ll flash it later today. Is any problem if WDR3600 is not under a DHCP network ? Is any way to push on it an static, but not routable IP ?
