4.9 How do I configure Squid forward all requests to another proxy? Note: The information here is current for version 2.2. First, you need to give Squid a parent cache. Second, you need to tell Squid it can not connect directly to origin servers. This is done with three configuration file lines: cache_peer parentcache.foo.com parent 3128 0 no-query default acl all src 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0 never_direct allow all Note, with this configuration, if the parent cache fails or becomes unreachable, then every request will result in an error message. In case you want to be able to use direct connections when all the parents go down you should use a different approach: cache_peer parentcache.foo.com parent 3128 0 no-query prefer_direct off The default behaviour of Squid in the absence of positive ICP, HTCP, etc replies is to connect to the origin server instead of using parents. The prefer_direct off directive tells Squid to try parents first. > 1 - user, squid, rabbit, Internet - Squid is only there to add transparent > proxying to Rabbit - it's not for anything else. > > -----Original Message----- > From: Holger Krull [mailto:hol...@gm...] > Sent: 30 January 2006 12:56 > To: rab...@li... > Subject: Re: [Rabbit-proxy-users] RE: RabbIT as a transparent proxy? > > Depends on what you mean by front > > 1. Depending on your timezone rabbit could misinterpret the expiry date. I think I have fixed this in rabbit/3.0 (still a pre-release). /robo |

I found a site where no picture get compressed with RabbIT proxy version 2.0.41. http://www.avitos.com Instead this shows up in the error log: [20/Jan/2006:01:14:37 GMT][WARN][expire date in the past: 'Fri, 20 Jan 2006 02:14:29 GMT'] [20/Jan/2006:01:14:37 GMT][WARN][expire date in the past: 'Fri, 20 Jan 2006 02:14:29 GMT'] [20/Jan/2006:01:14:37 GMT][WARN][expire date in the past: 'Fri, 20 Jan 2006 02:14:29 GMT'] [20/Jan/2006:01:14:37 GMT][WARN][expire date in the past: 'Fri, 20 Jan 2006 02:14:29 GMT'] [20/Jan/2006:01:14:37 GMT][WARN][expire date in the past: 'Fri, 20 Jan 2006 02:14:29 GMT'] [20/Jan/2006:01:14:37 GMT][WARN][expire date in the past: 'Fri, 20 Jan 2006 02:14:29 GMT'] [20/Jan/2006:01:14:37 GMT][WARN][expire date in the past: 'Fri, 20 Jan 2006 02:14:29 GMT'] [20/Jan/2006:01:14:37 GMT][WARN][expire date in the past: 'Fri, 20 Jan 2006 02:14:29 GMT'] [20/Jan/2006:01:14:37 GMT][WARN][expire date in the past: 'Fri, 20 Jan 2006 02:14:29 GMT'] [20/Jan/2006:01:14:37 GMT][WARN][expire date in the past: 'Fri, 20 Jan 2006 02:14:29 GMT'] [20/Jan/2006:01:14:37 GMT][WARN][expire date in the past: 'Fri, 20 Jan 2006 02:14:29 GMT'] [20/Jan/2006:01:14:37 GMT][WARN][expire date in the past: 'Fri, 20 Jan 2006 02:14:29 GMT'] Is there anything i could change in the rabbit.conf to force compression? RYNL has over 1400% volume increase in todays trading! Reynaldo's Mexican Food Inc. Symbol: RYNL Date: Dec 22 2005 Days High: $0.15 Good Evening Members, Well today sure has been interesting. Last night we told you about RYNL a wonderful stock with a long history and a solid foundation for investment. Today it looks as though many of you agreed. Today we saw 1480% increase in trading volume and a high of $0.15 in price. We find this exciting, especially with a strong stock like this. Looks like this is turning out to be an early Christmas present for a number of our members. With volume Climbing that fast the price will soon follow. Keep an eye on this one again tomorrow, with volume pushing the price up, we are bound to see RYNL start to move up the market and fast. For those of you members who missed this boat yesterday we have added yesterdays information release below for your review. Congratulations to those of you who jumped on this boat and took a tidy profit from the days trading. We are excited to see it rise some more tomorrow as we are sure you are too. Have a great evening, and a great trading day tomorrow. |

Hello! I recently started to develop rabbit version3.0. So now is the time to yell if you have feature requests. Why the 3.0 bump? Rabbit changes from the old one thread per connection to use the nio packages, basically this means that only a few threads will run. Hopefully rabbit will handle a silly amount of connections this way. Why? Well I wanted to write something larger using nio. Current status: Not yet working. SSL tunneling seems to work. Http requests are sent to the real server (or chained proxy), resource are not yet sent back to the client (any day now), nothing is yet cached. I clean the code up, sometimes I make it better, I will probably introduce bugs, so volonters for testing later will be needed. Anyone interested in the current status can grab it from: http://www.khelekore.org/rabbit/rabbit3/index.shtml have fun /robo |

Hello! I have written an alternative image handler, it may have less latency than the old one. It is still throwing a few random errros, but if anyone want to test it, tell me. Otherwise it will probably be in the next release (hopefully without throwing exceptions :-). It has a few advantages: 1) the code is simpler 2) it may have less latency 3) it does not care about the cache (let a lower layer handle it). This means that it is possible to set cache size to 0 and still have image conversion. Some possible problems: 1) Not sure about error handling when bad images are converted. 2) May send larger image (there are a few that convert to larger images). 3) Still untested. It will always use chunked data sending, but that is hopefully not a problem. I will play with it some more tomorrow, for anyone interested: http://www.khelekore.org/rabbit/RabbIT2.0.42-pre1.jar Have fun /robo |

I do not run any large instance of rabbit myself... Anyone who know how rabbit handle small/medium/large users feel free to fill in, please. Please note that for now you need a small cache for image conversion. It uses the cache for the temporary files. So if you do _not_ allow any cache at all, then you will not get any image conversion. >I'm not sure if 64 bits or dual core helps. > > Rabbit uses threads so multiple cores will help. I would guess that convert can handle 64 bits nicely, if you compile it yourself or use a distribution for 64 bits. >I suppose I could do some imageMagick conversions and time them. > > Also note that convert is not the fastest converter for all formats. It does however handle all of the image formats I find on the web. >Probably the greatest souce of delay is the fact that the image must >arrive completely at the server before being covereted and then finally >sent towards its destination. > Perhaps, it is probably not hard to write a image handler that uses convert with stdin/stdout. That might help a bit if all you want is low latency (that handler would also not need a cache). Hmm, Ill think Ill try to build such a filter and see how it goes... Have fun /robo |

Has anyone figured out some server specs that minimize delay when using this, while not getting silly cost wise. For the configuration I'm considering the server would probably not cache anything. The caching would be at a server at the end of a slow link. I'm guessing something like Any reliable hdd. 1GB memory -- I'm guessing that would handle at least a couple dozen users transcoding images without any hard drive. Athlon 64 X2 (3800?) I'm not sure if 64 bits or dual core helps. The first would probably depend on if ImageMagic can take advantage of it when compiled on gentoo. The second would probably depend if RabbiT can be doing two different things at once. Of course I suppose you could always start a second process and give it a different port. I haven't worked with a dual core chips before, or 64 bit for that matter. I was just curious if this would give any real speed benefit. I suppose I could do some imageMagick conversions and time them. Probably the greatest souce of delay is the fact that the image must arrive completely at the server before being covereted and then finally sent towards its destination. -Robert |

Rabbit currently think that compressed pages are pages that some other person have tried to minimize so the possible gain of unpacking, filtering and repacking is not worth it. >So how to be sure they are compressed ? Perhaps I will add a recieved/sent information, many people want it. How would latency be computed? Most data is streamed through rabbit so the cost is very small. Images however are first fully downloaded then converted then sent. /robo |

Hi, I've finally succeeded getting Rabbit to work on my home server with my PocketPC as a client. I still have a few questions/remarks that might be of interest: 1) Websites with plain address (like news.google.fr) are not processed by BodyHandler even if I comment the lines "text/html; ch..." in the config file and only leave "text/html=3D[...]FilterHandler", However website that redirect to a file type address (like mysite.com/index.html) seems to work (as the "Rabbit processed this page appear" So how to be sure they are compressed ? Is there a way to force rabbit to gzip all types it doesn't understand, if yes how ? 2) Is it possible to add for each cache line on the configuration website the compression ratio (or the save amount) ? 3) Is it possible to add a global 'total bytes initially received / total bytes sent / added latency ' to the global status page so it possible to appreciate the gain ? The only thing that could be a problem is if your version of pocket IE (or whatever web browser you use) does not support gzip compression. For what I know pocket opera did not do it a few years ago, but nowdays I think all of them do it. Have fun /robo |

Hi, I would like to know (if I understand the project goal correctly), if it is possible to do such configuration : - I have a server which is always connected to Internet through a xDSL link. This server is under Debian. I want to run Rabbit on this server. - I have a pocket pc with a GPRS connection (40kbits/s), which I configure to connect to the proxy on the server. If I understand correctly, whenever I browse the internet via the pocket pc, it will automatically download a compressed version of each website, with both pictures and text compressed. The real website is downloaded on the server (with, let's say it is 100kbytes of data), and the website I'm browsing on the pocket pc is downloaded compressed (let's say it is 30kbytes of data), so I can save some bandwidth from my GPRS account. Please tell me if I'm wrong. Sincerely, Cyril |

Hello! I have just released rabbit/2.0.39 This version needs java/5 (as did 2.0.38). What have changed? * A fix for the cache that causes unneccesary cache misses. * Added channels and selector based io for client side keepalive and tunneling handler. What does that mean? * Hopefully less memory usage for data transfers. * Hopefully less threads used by rabbit. Your milage may vary, so please report progress, both good and bad. If you are interested in the full changelog it is available at: http://www.khelekore.org/rabbit/changelog.shtml You can download the binaries and source from: http://www.khelekore.org/rabbit/ Have fun /robo |

Hello! I have made a the second 2.0.39 release. It can probably still be a bit unstable, but seems to be working fine for my small tests. http://www.khelekore.org/rabbit/RabbIT2.0.39-pre2.jar Changelog this far: 2.0.39 (20050609) Fixed a bug in the cache. Added channels and transferTo calls, ought to increase performance and decrease memory usage. Added a StackTrace status page. More generics. Connections are now selected on instead of read() with timeout, ought to decrease the number of threads needed. That client connections now use a selector ought to mean that client side connections can have a higher keepalive time for free. Rabbit ought to use less threads due to this. Connections still use blocking io to talk to the real servers, I will see if that is easy to fix. It would be great to hear of any changes in behaviour (good or bad). Have fun! /robo |

Hello! I have made a the first 2.0.39 release. It can probably still be a bit unstable, but please help test it. http://www.khelekore.org/rabbit/RabbIT2.0.39-pre1.jar The changelog currently looks like: 2.0.39 (20050604) Fixed a bug in the cache. Added channels and transferTo calls, ought to increase performance and decrease memory usage. Added a StackTrace status page. This release is the first step on the way to using java.nio. In the future I will hopefully be able to move the threaded code to a Selector, not sure how hard a task that is. Anyway please help test and report status. Have fun! /robo |
