Hi Does anyone could suggest me another project as good as this? I am happy with my centos 3 but for internal politics I need upgrade versions. Thanks Fabricio Vargas |

I recently installed to a new server, and restored all the setting from the old one. Everything is working fine, but login takes forever - as much as a minute after pressing the login button. The login page itself loads quickly as expected, and once the login has finally happened everything else works fast also. Any idea what could be taking so long? -- nigel |

You should be able to upgrade RH9 to Centos3 using the guide. I am pretty sure that still works. If it doesn't, I'd like to know about that. > Is there a preliminary outline of the new system and a > time line? New job is currently taking lots of toll on me, but things are sorting themselves out. Currently, the largest hindrance preventing me from working on the migration stuff is the fact that I don't have a test machine that I can easily blow away whenever I need to play with reinstalls -- I've had to leave all my older hardware in the US before moving. I'll probably buy an old used Dell before too long, but it has to wait until some bills are paid. :) Conversely, if anyone wants to donate ~$200 for the purposes of buying hardware for testing/development, I certainly won't say no, and this will probably speed things up considerably. If any charitable people on this list would like to volunteer, just get in touch with me. :) The system I plan to migrate everyone to is going to be something like this: Postfix+MySQL+Dovecot+Squirrelmail I've decided to drop LDAP in favour of MySQL, since it's much faster and easier to maintain, and because thanks to the work of Paul Lesneiwski, Vadmin now largely has MySQL backend support, so migration would be much easier for you and your clients (familiar interface, etc, etc). Once I have the testing box, my job would pretty much consist of: * Writing migration scripts * Making sure Vadmin works with the new setup * Packaging up Vadmin and maybe an updated version of Dovecot for RHEL4/Centos4, since Dovecot in it is quite dated and doesn't have some useful features, especially for migrating off of courier-imap. Once RHEL5/Centos5 is out, I will only have to worry about Vadmin, which would be so nice (currently I have to deal with ~15 very hairy packages) * Writing up the installation and migration guide * Testing things live * Releasing things to the world as project Mailhub For the last step I will need volunteers. :) I no longer have access to the only live installation of QVCS that I used to maintain. The testing is still to come, though, so we'll worry about that later. Hope this helps clear things up. Cheers, -- Konstantin Ryabitsev McGill University WSG Mal: "Now, you only gotta scare him." Hello, First off I need to thank Konstantin for QVCS Guide. I have been running a QVCS system for many many years, Since Redhat 7, and am very happy user. ;) I read that Konstantin is preparing a migration path to a new frontier from the QVCS guide. I'm currently running a happy RH9 box and was looking at what I could do to add SPF and DomainKeys support to the system. I guess my first question is should leave the RH9 box alone and wait for the migration tool? Should I or is it even still possible to upgrade the RH9 QVCS version to the Centos-3 QVCS version? Is there a preliminary outline of the new system and a time line? I know. Hard questions... And again. thanks. __________________________________________ Yahoo! DSL Something to write home about. Ooops while since I read the emails in this list, bad me.. Anyway have you looked at magic-smtpd which is a drop in replacement for qmails smtpd? It has a whole raft of features for anti-spam and certainly helped me when I used to have that problem. I > recall you had some future plans for qvcs earlier?? QVCS, at least the "QVC" part of it, deserves to die. It's a setup that was suitable for late 90s, and is woefully outdated today. It is my plan to migrate everyone off of it to something more modern. Now, the problem I'm facing at the moment is that I am currently between jobs, due to a certain Canadian startup (now burning and dying) who promised to hire me, but then changed their minds a few weeks before I was scheduled to start. Luckily, I have found employment at McGill university, but due to several levels of hell called "bureaucracy," I can't start working there until my new work permit gets approved. Theoretically, that's a matter of days by now. Practically, it could be anything. So, I've been reluctant to commit myself to anything in the past 4-5 months due to the uncertainty of my situation: if my work permit doesn't come through, I'll have to leave Canada to go elsewhere, and that includes potentially places where Internet is absent, or very spotty at best. If I do get the work permit, I give you my word that I'll do my best to have a migration path off of QVCS by New Year's, and that should be without any loss of functionality (quite on the contrary, with standard tools you'll be able to tack on many other things without having to fight the now-obsolete qmail). If I get screwed... well... I'm afraid that then we all get screwed. :) Believe me, I'll get screwed much more than you all. :/ That's the status of things right now. I will probably modify the qvcs-guide page to add "Obsolete. Please don't install. Existing users will be migrated," once my situation clears. Cheers, -K |

I think I'll leave it alone :) however, it seems that the qvcs guide is going nowhere.. and the spam stuff is just not working (without a lot of extra work).. so... Konstantin, is there any chance we will have a new guide with updated tools and software that will deal with spam better and maybe not depend so much on the software versions installed on the server... I recall you had some future plans for qvcs earlier?? (..btw, good work so far, this is not meant as criticism, but since I'm hosting stuff and don't have the skills to install and maintain all these pieces of software myself I rely on great people like you :)) regards, Kjetil On 10/22/05, Michael Hicks <mh...@we...> wrote: > My advice is not to touch anything unless Konstantin says it will be OK. > If you're forced to reinstall for any reason, you may be out of luck, as > the CentOS 3.3 Guide does not currently appear to be compatible with the > updates it downloads. My advice is not to touch anything unless Konstantin says it will be OK. If you're forced to reinstall for any reason, you may be out of luck, as the CentOS 3.3 Guide does not currently appear to be compatible with the updates it downloads. This observation is based on attempts to clean-install the Guide (which I have done often in the past) multiple times last weekend with no success. I'm a casual sysadmin though, so take my advice with the proverbial grain of salt. -Mike Kjetil Paulsen wrote: >Hi > >I've had an request for installing ezPublish for a customer and it >requires PHP4.4, will this break SquirrelMailIVmailMngr etc in the >QVCS setup?? > >-kjetil- > |

Hey ezpublish is kinda heavy to run. I would not recomend to combined it =20 with the mailserver. At least if you are going to use ezPublish with =20 multiple hosts. I dont know if the current version in qvcs of squirrelmail works on =20 php 4.4 but if not you could just download the latest squirrelmail =20 and it should be okay. it does not work with PHP5 though. You will need: http://linux.duke.edu/~icon/RPMS/i386/python-cdb-0.32-1.i386.rpm http://linux.duke.edu/~icon/misc/vmcdb2xml.py To convert: rpm -Uvh python-cdb-0.32-1.i386.rpm chmod a+x vmcdb2xml.py ./vmcdb2xml.py passwd.cdb Results will be written into passwd.cdb.xml Let me know how this works. --icon |
