Thanks to Steve for a long and very helpful contribution. You might be = on to something in respect of sequence numbers. However, my problem is that = "I" am not doing anything at this level. All I have done is: 1) Modify the Executor example to write messages/logs to disc. 2) Added some code to the Application Class so that a sensible sample = order fill would be returned. 3) Played with the configuration file to (hopefully) get the session settings right: I am not setting/interfering with number sequencing or any stuff like = that. That all happens under the hood and before it gets to my code. Config file is: [DEFAULT] BeginString=3DFIX.4.3 ConnectionType=3Dacceptor ReconnectInterval=3D60 StartDay=3Dsunday StartTime=3D19:00:00 EndDay=3Dsaturday EndTime=3D18:00:00 MillisecondsInTimestamp=3DY UseDataDictionary=3DY DataDictionary=3DFIX43.xml FileStorePath=3Doutput/data/executor FileLogPath=3Doutput/data/executor HeartBtInt=3D30 SocketAcceptPort=3D9876 SocketAcceptAddress=3D218.25.25.66 [SESSION] SenderCompID=3DSFCTRADE_TEST TargetCompID=3DAPC_TEST Peter -----Original Message----- From: qui...@li... I understand that the log message does not necessarily mean a problem. The problem is that the acceptor is replying = to the Logon message with a Logout (35=3D5) so we can never get a = conversation started. The initiator is an established FIX engine (quickfix C version) already successfully talking with other institutions. So using Banzai wont help. I'm trying to get a quickfixj acceptor running (based on the executor example) and have made decent progress. I am receiving what look like perfectly good Logon messages from an initiator but their authentication fails on my side so a Logout message = is returned to the initiator. The failure seems to be to do with a message = that the 'session is not current'. I don't know what this means nor how to = fix it. Any ideas?? Message-ID: <106...@we...> Content-Type: text/plain;charset=3Diso-8859-1 That log message doesn't necessarily indicate a problem. It's telling = you that you have begun a new session (based on your session start/end schedule) and it's going to reset the message store and sequence = numbers. This may or may not be a problem depending on the context. It appears you are using the example order executor for your test. Have you tried running Banzai as a client to the executor with the configuration changed slightly for your scenario? The message not sent log event means that a message send was attempted before a connection was established. This is an informational message since the message will eventually be sent once the session is = established. The timestamp on the log event doesn't match any of the messages in the message log you provided. An outgoing message should have been logged=20 at the time the event was logged. The reason I suggested using Banzai with your configuration is that these problems are often caused by incorrect configurations. If Banzai works with your configuration then it would be good to investigate the application behavior further. If Banzai shows the same behavior, it's probably the configuration file although it could be some environment issue (like the time offset suggestion, for example). The other common cause is a sequence number problem. One strange thing I see is that you have reset your session which implies the sequence numbers have been reset to 1. However, the = initiator is semding a sequence number of 17. A sequence number that is too high will cause an immediate disconnect by the acceptor. However, I'd=20 expect to see a logged event. Are you sure your initiator is resetting it's sequence numbers in a way consistent with the acceptor? Regards, Steve -----Original Message----- From: qui...@li... Hi Peter, The time offsets can cause a problem in some cases but your log = indicates that the offset is less than a few seconds and normally that would not cause the login to be rejected unless MaxLatency was configured to a = very small value. Hi Matyas, Thank you for that thought. I have tried hard to synchronize the = computer clocks but maybe not successfully. I'll look at the initiator logs and compare times. Hi! I had a similar problem few mounths ago... The session could not be established. It was a time sinchronization problem between the 2 computers. It was only a 0.5 min, but the accptor can't process the msg of the initiator... I'm wondering if this couldn't be a problem in your case... Steve, Thank you for your response. That line is an artifact of how QuickFIX used to resend requests. =20
You are correct that it will in all cases be overwritten, but it is =20
intentional that resend requests are done the new way. It has been =20
recommended for some time that all resend requests be done to =20
infinity instead of asking for specific ranges. The relevant section =20=
of the specification is this:
Ordered Message Processing:
The FIX protocol assumes complete ordered delivery of messages =20
between parties. Implementers should
consider this when designing message gap fill processes. Two options =20=
exist for dealing with gaps, either request
all messages subsequent to the last message received or ask for the =20
specific message missed while maintaining
an ordered list of all newer messages. For example, if the receiver =20
misses the second of five messages, the
application could ignore messages 3 through 5 and generate a resend =20
request for messages 2 through 5, or,
preferably 2 through 0 (where 0 represents infinity). Another option =20=
would involve saving messages 3 through 5
and resending only message 2. In both cases, messages 3 through 5 =20
should not be processed before message 2.
The spec doesn't explain why this is, but asking for specific ranges =20
can lead into some unfortunate resend-request loops. Either way you =20
will not miss messages. The protocol is designed to handle infinite =20
resend requests in this fashion. The sequence numbers are always =20
used to verify the next messages that needs to be passed to your =20
application. The PossDup is just what is says, a possible =20
duplicate. QuickFIX will always verify if the message is an actual =20
duplicate and pass it on to you if it has not seen the message before =20=
regardless of the contents of that field.

I'm taking this up with the counterparty, but there is a quickfix
related issue here to I think, related to quickfix's resend request. The
code in Session.java has:
=20
private void generateResendRequest(String beginString, int
msgSeqNum) {
Message resendRequest =3D messageFactory.create(beginString,
MsgType.RESEND_REQUEST);
int beginSeqNo =3D getExpectedTargetNum();
int endSeqNo =3D msgSeqNum - 1; // Why initialized when it will =
be
// overwritten
if (beginString.compareTo("FIX.4.2") >=3D 0) {
endSeqNo =3D 0;
} else if (beginString.compareTo("FIX.4.1") <=3D 0) {
endSeqNo =3D 999999;
}
resendRequest.setInt(BeginSeqNo.FIELD, beginSeqNo);
resendRequest.setInt(EndSeqNo.FIELD, endSeqNo);
initializeHeader(resendRequest.getHeader());
sendRaw(resendRequest, 0);
getLog().onEvent("Sent ResendRequest FROM: " + beginSeqNo + "
TO: " + endSeqNo);
state.setResendRange(beginSeqNo, msgSeqNum - 1);
}
=20
I don't understand why it has these lines:
=20
if (beginString.compareTo("FIX.4.2") >=3D 0) {
endSeqNo =3D 0;
} else if (beginString.compareTo("FIX.4.1") <=3D 0) {
endSeqNo =3D 999999;
}
=20
The line before, setting it to msgSeqNum-1 seems much more correct, and
more consistent with the state.setResendRange(beginSeqNo, msgSeqNum - 1)
code as well. Hopefully if the counterparty responded with a GapFill for
just these, then any messages coming afterwards would not be lost.

Indeed. For whatever reason they chose to gap fill this message. This
is most commonly done with administrative messages (heartbeats etc), but
is occasionally done for application messages as well (Orders that are
too old to go into market). This is analysis is correct. For some
reason they put TradingSessionStatus in this category, which may or may
not be intentional or an oversight. =20
=20
FYI, here is the relevant section in the specifications:
=20
"The sending application will initiate the Sequence Reset. The message
in all situations specifies NewSeqNo=20
to reset to as the value of the next sequence number to be expected by
the message receipient immediately=20
following the messages and/or sequence numbers being skipped."

First of all, there is some additional info (as you may have known) http://www.fixprotocol.org/committees/gtc/documents http://www.fixprotocol.org/documents/2943/FIX%205.0%20FAQs.doc I am not sure if they will publish the repository files. As long as the message can be delivered once, can be guaranteed delivery, and in the right order, it can be on any non-FIX session for example MQ. Another thing they talked is like a firm can use FIX 5 session to send an order in FIX 4.2 and then allocate using FIX 4.4 for example. (I think QF needs to think a way to make the application easily forward compatible, for example how to reuse the existing application code using quickfix.fix44 package work with FIX 5? and how to reuse the application code to work on both FIX 44 and FIX 5 rather than rewriting the code using "quickfix.fix5" package?) Then there are concept of extension package and service pack. Then some new support on the business side, like FX, advancement in order routing, and regulatory initiatives...... That's has been a key problem with directly supporting the repository in the past, we simply are not allowed to redistribute it as is. If not we will likely end up generating the QF data dictionary from the repository. We have code that can do this assuming their format hasn't changed significantly. We do have plans to support FAST. FIX 5.0 and FAST support are both significant projects and we will need to prioritize to figure out which we want to tackle first. Any other information you have would be very useful. Did they go over any scenarios regarding the transport independence? We went to FPL's Technology Focus Day 2006 today: http://www.fixprotocol.org/documents/2893/FPL_Technology_Focus_Day.pdf Besides transport independence framework and running different FIX versions on the same session, FIX 5 will use XML to organize repository (some similar to quickfix's xml dictionaries). Alvin, The messages table needs to be able to be reset. When a new session is created, all the messages must be destroyed as they are not longer relevant to the session. Further more a session can be reset during the day or altered in other ways. This is not a trait that is desirable in logging, which must persist indefinitely until you would specifically like to purge it. The log is a record of everything that happened regardless of the state of the engine. Furthermore, it is often desirable to use one storage medium for managing state, and a separate one for logging. --oren On Oct 25, 2006, at 9:58 AM, Alvin Wang wrote: > QuickFIX/J Documentation: http://www.quickfixj.org/documentation/ > QuickFIX/J Support: http://www.quickfixj.org/support/ > Toby, thanks. > > I feel if there is an inbound/outbound tag in messages_log table, > those 2 > tables can be merged. Toby, thanks.
I feel if there is an inbound/outbound tag in messages_log table, those 2
tables can be merged. Now it seems half of the data are duplicated. Do I
miss anything?

The messages table is used by the message store, and it stores all
messages which are sent by you, in such a way that they can be resent if
required. It only stores outbound messags, because there's never any
need to replay inbound messages.
The messages_log table is one way in which you can log all inbound and
outbound messages for diagnosing problems or simply checking that
everything is as expected. You could equally use a different logging
adapter and log to a file or logging service. These logs are not
replayable and are only for informational purposes.
Not sure how you tell if messages are inbound or outbound as don't use
the DB for logging. In my log4j text files it's readily apparent by
logging the class along with the message "quickfixj.msg.outgoing" vs
"quickfixj.msg.incoming" but I can see you may well not get this in the
DB logging. You can always tell by checking the Source and Target
CompIDs in the quickfix message itself, though that's not very
convenient. Hopefully there's a better way.

seems
messages table only record the outgoing msgs. Why do we need 2 tables?
Also in messages_log table, how to easily tell if a message is outgoing

Hi Matyas, According to the FIX 4.4 specification (in the data type descriptions)... "Data fields are always immediately preceded by a length field. The length field should specify the number of bytes of the value of the data field (up to but not including the terminating SOH)." It must be there because the data field could have 0x01 bytes (SOH) in it so the normal parsing can't be used. Regards, Steve -----Original Message----- From: qui...@li... Usually this error occurs if the store file is corrupt or if you try to
use a store file created by QF. In the latter case, just delete the
store file and QFJ will create a new one automatically. Obviously you
should do this outside a scheduled session time. :-)
