Yes I've tried like this :

fixMessage.getString(quickfix.field.UnderlyingSecurityID.FIELD);

and having FieldnotFound exception. And when I look into my quickfix.Message
object (in eclipse debug) , 

in the property "fileds" {...,222=222=1M, 236=236=4.3680381, 423=423=6,
460=460=13,..} 

I don't have the field 309 , but in the property "messageData" , it's here :
