Do you have any information about the nature of the
errors?  It would be nice to make the build scripts
more portable.

FYI, many people have built on RedHat 7.3, but it
generally rquires running the bootstrap script first. 
Same goes for FreeBSD 5.0 (I've never tried it on 4.x)
