I've experienced this one as well. It seems to be a problem with gcc 3.0.4. 
I was not able to resolve it, so I re-installed the box with gcc 3.2.2, 
which will compile quickfix 1.5.0 (eventually). The OS I'm using is RedHat 9.

For the record, and in case anyone else is interested, I was unsuccessful 
with FreeBSD 4.8, FreeBSD 4.7, Debian 3.0r1, and Redhat 7.3.
