Thanks for the quick response.

Am I correct in thinking that if I use user_defined to stick fields in
messages then I'm effective overriding the typing that's enforced if you use
the generated headers?

How do the user defined fields and the data dictionary relate?  The image I
have currently is that the data dictionary is used to validate messages
somewhere inside the QuickFix engine and then the generated headers or user
defined fields are used to actually build those messages.  Is that correct?
