Rodrick , thanks for the resolution.
 
the file actually turned out to be an html file !
I was using Right click -> Save As feature in firefox to download it.
Now I just clicked on the file and followed the dialog, it downloads
correctly.

try using file <filename_you_downloaded> it will let you know if the
file you downloaded is an actually gz file or tar format. My guess is
its probably in tar format and still named file.tar.gz 
 
Using file should indicate if the file is corrupted, damaged or just
named incorrectly.

	I have worked with quick before on redhat.
	Now, I am trying to download and install quickfix on fedora 8.
	Each download seems to resulting in different size file for
	quickfix.tar.gz (6K or 21k)
	unzip, gunzip and tar cannot understand the file format.
	
	I can download the windows version, and unzip it.
	Any help, pointer in the right direction would be appreciated.
