Dear Luigi & list, thx, I think now the problem has been
found and also fixed as follows:

We had in our firewall on the server some IPs and IP ranges
blocked b/c of massive hacking and DoS attempts coming from
them sometime in the past.

It seems that now the gmail servers are using some of these addresses... :-)
After removing them from the firewall it now happily works again!

Sorry for the unnecessary bandwith this problem has caused in the list.
