Ok fixed, exactly how not sure.

Turns out there was a config file in /documents/mygames/darkplaces/modfolder 
that had alot of scr_ type commands set in it as well as some others that 
referenced Quake2. I commented them out and the problem went away. When I 
went back to look at the names of the cvars, the cvar had been overwritten 
and the comments were gone. I think what happened is I sometimes use another 
mod then manually browse to this one using the browse mode option in the DP 
menu. So I suppose the config file for the other mod may have been placed 
over the old one.
