#16 Formatting an external hard drive
I just bought an external hard drive case for 2.5''
hard drives. It works very well and gets recognized
by the kernel immediately.
I put in a 80GB hard drive and tried to partition and
format it with Qtparted. Unfortunately, formatting it
with ext failed. This was independent of the hard
drive used, it also happened with an 30GB drive. The
path to mkext3fs was configured properly in the
prefs, but trying to commit the changes to the drive
resulted in an error. FAT32 worked fine :) .
I have a further 40GB drive, so if you need more
details, simply ask and I surely can provide it.
Finally I used YaST to partition the drives which
went fine.
QtParted is a very cool app, and it would be cool to
iron out this bug.

Same when trying to format a 64 Mb usb stick with NTFS filesystem from an uptodate Mandriva Cooker with qtparted-0.4.5-7mdv2008.0.i586.rpm under GNOME 2.19:
Qtparted sees the "disk", gives the choice of formatting NTFS, but then goes to 100% of using CPU resources and can be killed only with great difficulty: None of the sig* in htop worked, nor "skill -c". In the end only closing with the X button in the upper rh corner enable a forced quit.
