Hello. I tried using Canadian topographic maps from toporama with qpegps and the entire image area was just a black rectangle.  I tried importing the .gif as-is, and converting it to a .png with imagemagick before importing it.

For an example of a toporama map, see
    http://toporama.cits.rncan.gc.ca/images/b50k/04/040p07.gif

The map is 3200 by 1600 pixels.  Can qpegps not handle a map of this size?

I should probably add that this is a SL-5500, sharp rom 3.10, with qpegps 0.9.0.

Generally the image size is only limited by the size of the memory. Therefore the used color depth is very important (try 8 bit). But 3200*1600 is very big. Did You get an "out of memory" message ? Does it work, if You reduce the size (e.g to 800*400) ?

The toporama map as provided is 8 bit colour.  I did get an out of memory error from the OS and a dialog asking to close an application after trying to import the map a few times.

I'll crop the map to a smaller size and try again at home tonight.
