I installed QDVDAuthor through Synaptic. When I try to load a .VOB file for a project, the thumbnails all read "ERROR." I cannot proceed at that point. Any ideas?

The problem is most likely the MPlayer configuration.

      check out
      mplayer -vo help

and make sure you see the jpeg plugin.

You can also try to use KXineWidget instead of QMPlayerWidget.

      Varol :)

I have the JPEG plugin, and KXineWidget doesn't change anything.

I downloaded 8.04 and will install it in VirtualBox tonight and see if I can figure out what is going on.

Can you send me the link to the qdvdauthor package you are using ( or the command line to install it ) ?

          Thanks

          Varol :)

Thanks a lot. I installed the program through Add/Remove, so whatever you find there is what I used.

Okay, I think I know what is going on.

I see that qdvdauthor comes compiled with xine support only. That is in the Setup you can only choose between KXineWidget, and QXineWidget. The QMPlayerWidget is missing.

That is not the real problem. The real problem is that the installed libxine does not support mpeg video. I could not play the test VOB files.

So you have multiple choices to fix this
      1) Re-compile libxine to include propper mpeg2 support.
      2) Re-compile QDVDAuthor with MPlayer support enabled.

I would actually recommend doing both in that order and for good measure I personally would also re-compile MPlayer from source.

Let me know if you had issues.

      Varol :)
Ps. Do you know how I can contact the pal who created the QDVDAuthor package for Ubuntu ? It would be nice to also include all templates and the button library in the actual install.

In Feisty Fawn, I compiled QDVDAuthor from source, but for some reason, I can't get it to work in Hardy Heron. When I switch to the package directory and input "./configure" I get the following error message:

As for recompiling libxine, I will have to try that while you analyze that error message. (Oh, and I don't know who created the Ubuntu package...sorry...)

It looks like you are missing the qt3 header - package

      try
      > sudo apt-get install qt3-apps-dev qt3-designer qt3-assistant qt3-dev-tools qt3-linguist libqt3-headers libqt3-mt-dev

      in general check
      > apt-cache search qt3

will return a nice list of possibilities :)

I installed all of those packages in Synaptic and finally got the compiler running. I clicked Make Clean, then Compile, then Install. When I clicked Install, nothing happened. When I clicked Execute, the thumbnails finally loaded! However, the program crashed when I clicked OK to load my selected mpeg.

          This is working here.

is this a repeatable crash ?

Everything works on my end too. I just had to wait a while before the configurator began to install; I mistook the delay as an error. I guess I just have to watch my dependencies and exercise patience. Thanks for all your help.

P.S. I first used QDVDAuthor on Feisty Fawn, and I must say that it is far easier to create chapters now that the preview pane isn't fuzzy.

What MediaBackend are you using and whe=at are your hardware spec ?

I have a single core here and have no crashes ( obviously ).

for some reason I can load a movie source now.But when I right click or click dvd menu to add a movie then go to properties and click on the sliding bar it it just crashes.

Also if I just try to burn a dvd I get this error

--> ERROR: Cannot convert movies with variable frame rates (yet). The reported
framerate is 1000.000 fps, which does not make sense.

My videos definitely not going that fast.

I'm new to Linux so I hope this isn't a silly question

      You suggested this...

      1) Re-compile libxine to include propper mpeg2 support.
      2) Re-compile QDVDAuthor with MPlayer support enabled.

could you tell me how I would do this, please?
      Thanks

I installed qdvdauthor from debian multimedia repository (http://debian-multimedia.org/pool/main/q/qdvdauthor/qdvdauthor_1.5.0.2-0.0_i386.deb) in my ubuntu 8.04 and now I can add video.

      http://www.getdeb.net/app/QDVDAuthor

which also has a package with resource files.
