The current ATLAS.ti import filter is based on SAX.
This was perhaps not a wise choice and a DOM
implementation would be superior and should incorporate
the Custom element feature whereby export to and import
from QDIF XML is lossless. That is, information that
would be lost on export to standard QDIF can be saved
in XML by including <custom> elements as sub-elements
to any QDIF element. <custom> elements can be ignored
by import filters that do not understand them. For
example, a <custom type="ATLASTI">...</custom> element
could be included as the content of any qdif element
that required other data to be saved with that element.
This could then be interpreted by the ATLAS.ti import
filter and ignored by other filters. Custom elements
can have any valid xml content.
