I agree that a scripting language (even if it's a functional one) ought
to have good support for them, and POSIX regexes certainly aren't the
pinnacle. I'll see what I can do about it, but I stand by my opinion
that a pcre module can (at least at first) be provided as an add-on; we
can always migrate it to the core later, once all backwards
compatibility issues have become non-problems.
