Great, thanks a lot for these hints. I'll add your patches to the next Q
release.

I agree that the autotools can be a PITA, but what other solution is
there to ease cross-platform building? I know about scons, but IMHO it
still needs time to mature, and it would also be a lots of work to port
all of Q over to a new build system.
