the example compiles without error in the current
debian/stretch texlive environment:
/tmp# pdflatex -v
pdfTeX 3.14159265-2.6-1.40.17 (TeX Live 2016/Debian)

one could check ubuntu 1604 and 1610, which have texlive versions
