Hey All, I have been bouncing between window managers trying to find a tiling window manager that's not written in something like Haskell or C. I don't want to bother with low level or complicated languages for something that should only require some light scripting. I was reading about PYWM and apparently it is quite customizable. The only problem is that it's not a tiling window manager. Would it be difficult to make PYWM tile like XMonad? Perhaps use workspaces? This is better described here: http://xmonad.org/tour.html Is PYWM still being used? Apparently there are other python tiling window managers like http://www.qtile.org/ Thank you for your time. -Sean Neilan Project Manager at Iowa Grain Company http://www.iowagrain.com/ Chicago, IL |

Hi, Pywm crashees when I try to empty the trash bin from thunar or save a with a same name with an existing file(from Firefox). All I get is "Segmentation fault" Could someone fix this? Currently, pywm(Well, flwm would be too but crashes when trying to launch an application) is the only window manager that manages to fulfill all my needs and doesn't have any extra crap :) |

Hi, I'm new here, hello everyone. I'm interested in pywm because I find somehow others window managers a bit limiter and I always wanted to be able to customise my window manager with a descent programming language (not like Fvwm). So, well, the question that I ask is if pywm is ICCM and EWMH compliant. Because it doesn't seems to work very well with devilspie and wmctrl (that I use). Furthermore, the gnome-panel doesn't seems to work with pywm at all (well, only the windows list part). Perhaps it's only because i'm using the old released version (2006). Should I try a more recent version ? Perhaps the darcs trunk ... But I don't have its address. And, well, could you tell me a bit about your strange version numbers ? Because 0.1-1-a4-1 seems to me a bit long (and cannot be translated with package managers that doesn't accept a dash '-' in version numbers. Well I translated it into 0.1.1.a4.1 for now) Thanks. Hi, Just a couple of simple questions: 1. Is it possible use ANY keys as hotkeys? 2. How do I customize the background color/picture :D Do I need a separate program for this ? Sorry, these may be more flwm-question than pywm ? It's just that I'm going to buy a slate tablet pc and pywm seems like it could fill my needs(i would intend to map zooming of windows to two of the side buttons of the tablet and maybe one to right-click menu). Keep up the good work! -Dox __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com |

hi, wondering whether the .deb packaging is still on its way or if someone could help me with my install (Xubuntu, although I've gotten rid of xfcein favor of flwm): Installed the following packages: libfltk1.1-dev (1.1.7-2) libfontenc-dev (1:1.0.4-1) libfreetype6-dev (2.2.1-5ubuntu1.1) libxfont-dev (1:1.2.7-1ubuntu1) x11proto-fonts-dev (2.0.2-5ubuntu1) xlibs-data (1:7.2-0ubuntu11) xlibs-static-dev (1:7.2-0ubuntu11) Reinstalled the following packages: xlibmesa-gl-dev (1:7.2-0ubuntu11) xlibs-dev (1:7.2-0ubuntu11) (is this too much/enough/right at all?) then when I tried to install I got: trav@fenway-park:~/Incoming/pywm-0.1-1-a4-1$ sudo python setup.py install ... screeds of errors ... src-pyrex/flwm_.c:2077: error: declaration for parameter __pyx_k12 but no such parameter src-pyrex/flwm_.c:1958: error: declaration for parameter __pyx_k11 but no such parameter src-pyrex/flwm_.c:1957: error: declaration for parameter __pyx_k10 but no such parameter src-pyrex/flwm_.c:1956: error: declaration for parameter __pyx_k9 but no such parameter src-pyrex/flwm_.c:1440: error: declaration for parameter __pyx_k8 but no such parameter src-pyrex/flwm_.c:223: error: declaration for parameter __pyx_k7 but no such parameter src-pyrex/flwm_.c:4686: error: expected { at end of input error: command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1 I'm interested in this wm since I really like flwm but would like to exercise my control freak tendencies a little more, so any help getting it going would be appreciated |

The tarball is a darcs repo (a branch), with which you can work with (it works without a central server, but I could set one up if deemed useful). Notice that your patch has tabs in the last part. Also, you might want to take a look at Leo, the editor (or ide) that the original author used. I'd be glad to hear from big improvements though, and if you continue to develop it, it would nice of you to tell about them on the webpage. hi to all 11 of you :D I have started to look at pywm to use on a touchscreen carPC. The touchscreen is a Lilliput 7" with 800x480 resolution. pywm seems like a good wm to use to run applications like GPSdrive on.. I really need to get controll over the application windows.. ..but there is a bug in the window-handling code somewhere.. The windows dont register as they should do. in the __init__.py file, WM class, we have _addWin, _delWin and window I had to manipulate these to get the window registering working. See the attached patch. This is just a hack so I can go on testing pywm, but I hope someone can take a look at it to locate the real bug.. So a question.. I use Xnest for testing pywm because a 7" 800x480 sized screen is less than comfortable to work on. When I start my pywm derivate (wm1.py), on a new Xnest with no applications, something goes wrong and I cant get my test Fl_Window to receive mouse click. Started like this: $ Xnest -ac -geometry 800x480 :22 & $ export DISPLAY=:22 $ ./wm1.py However when one application is running inside Xnest before I start wm1.py it works.. (Started like this): $ Xnest -ac -geometry 800x480 :22 & $ export DISPLAY=:22 $ xclock& $ ./wm1.py So , is this another bug, or is it something I dont do right..? I have attached wm1.py as a simple test wm. Shift-a will launch a rxvt console Shift-s will print out the 'WM.windows' dir and 'WM.windowlist' list content for debugging of window-handling. -- Mvh, Nils Olav Fossum |

Hi all I tried to install Pywm, but I got a runtime error. Before I describe the error, I would like to explain *why* I tried to install Pywm. I know very little about window managers, but I have a particular requirement, and I hoped that Pywm might provide a solution. However it might also be a complete sidetrack, so perhaps someone can advise. I am writing an accounting/business application using Python and wxPython. I am experimenting with setting up a diskless workstation, using FC5, to make deployment of clients easier. So far it looks good. The WS boots up and shows an FC5 login screen. After login it shows a normal Gnome desktop. This is fine for users that require a full desktop. I also want to run the workstation as a 'terminal', that on boot-up goes straight into my application. I have found out that FC5 uses Metacity as its window manager. I can do an auto-login, and I can launch my app automatically, but I cannot figure out how to run it without the desktop. Therefore I have been experimenting with different window managers, but I have not found one that behaves the way I want. This is my ideal scenario. The WS boots up, displays a background image of my choice, and launches my app. Each window must have a normal title bar, which behaves the same as an MSW or Gnome one - i.e. an icon on the left with a menu with maximise, minimise, Alt+F4 to exit, etc, and on the right a minimise, maximise, and close button. wxPython allows you to specify which buttons must appear on the title bar, so it must respect this. Once in my app, the user can have several windows open at the same time. Therefore the user must be able to press Alt+Tab to cycle between the windows, and there must be a taskbar at the bottom with a button for each of the currently open windows to allow direct selection. It would be nice to put a clock and other goodies on the task bar as well. There may be other things I need (you only find out when you start to run the app) but that is enough to be going on with. Would I be able to do this with Pywm? Any advice will be much appreciated. This is the error I got after installing Pywm. It appeared to install ok. I cannot run pywm-run.py as I do not have TkInter installed. However, from reading the program, it appeared that I should be able to simply type ./example1.py. I tried that, and got the following traceback (shortened) - import flwm_ ImportError: .../flwm.so: undefined symbol: XDestroyRegion I probably did something wrong during the installation. Perhaps someone can point me in the right direction. I am using pywm-0.1-1-a4-1, Pyrex-0.9.4.1, and fltk-1.1.x-r5385, on FC5. TIA Frank Millman |

PyWM seems to be quite stable, but other than that, it's basically in a prototype state. It can be quite usable if you have time to fiddle with it, but doesn't do much good out of the box. I'm the current maintainer, and would really like to improve PyWM, but my current prioritization doesn't allow me to do much.
