Looks very much doable, as in, I  see no specific obstacles, but that's
only based on a quick read of you description. Also, if you decide to
use pywm, I can promise that it will need some tinkering, though not
much necessarily. I hope to be able ponder this more.

Did you have the proper headers and libs installed when compiling? You
might be lucky and and succeed by just installing something like x-dev
and xlibs metapackages. Other than that, I should be able to help, but I
can't promise anything about the time it takes for me to answer.

If not a very helpful response, this is to indicate that this list isn't
abandoned.
