Sorry, Matlab is not freely downloadable, but here's a link to a post about the xprop. Basically it gets tiled but its horizontally offset by the height of the decoration (decoration still shows so it overlaps the window above it).
Just something I've noticed in daily usage, this only happens on the second monitor (screen 1), and if I minimize my gnome-panel it corrects itself. It seems pytyle seems to assign to matlab the correct dimensions (1280x1024) but incorrectly adds a strut at the top based on gnome-panel which is on screen 0. Other apps, as far as I have seen, do not experience this problem.
