I just wanted to let people know that I've finally been able to put together a Debian package for 0.8.x. This obviously got held off a long time, and I apologize for that. First, there was no suitable 2.5.x wxWidgets package in Debian. Then, even though 2.5.3.2 became available in mid-November, I didn't realize it was there until today. Anyway, the new package has roughly the same form as the old 0.7.3.1 package did. The main difference is that you'll have to add a special wx-2.5.3-gtk2-unicode directory to your $PYTHONPATH to resolve wxPython properly. I don't like this, but I don't seem to have an alternative right now. See README.Debian for details. Most everything seems to work, at least from what I've been able to test. A few of the samples (worldclock and moderator, in particular) didn't seem to behave quite properly, but I haven't quantified the problems as of yet. As always, please file bug reports using Debian's 'reportbug' tool, and feel free to write me with questions. I'll be out-of-town most of the next two weeks, but I will be able to check my email every few days or so. Thanks, KEN --=20 Kenneth J. Pronovici <pro...@de...> |

Hello, I have Windows XP Home and Python23 installed. Following=20 instructions "How To Install PythonCard on Windows" I=B4ve just installed= =20 wxPython and PythonCard.to C:/Python23 directory. When I open "minimal.py" in .../PythonCard/samples/minimal/ or "starter1.py" in .../PythonCard/docs/Getting start= ed/ by double-click, I get the same nice result: there opens a low black=20 window "Python23/python.exe" and there pops up the small frame "Minimal=20 Pytho..." with File button and text field "Hello Python Card" - the same=20 as viewed in the web page. My question is: Why am I getting the "...not valid Win 32=20 application" response? I am afraid my question is a little silly, but I cant=B4help. Any ideas?=20 Thanks. = =20 Tovim =20 |

Kevin asked for input about a logo earlier this year. Of course, if you don't have a logo to submit, there isn't much to input. Being that PythonCard isn't really about cards (other than Hypercard), I can't think of a suitable logo. Be nice if it also looked good as a program icon. The consensus among my users is that the python icon (py.ico) is as cute as a bug, so how to top that? |

The default size and position of the window remain what they are set to when you use the Resource Editor - which of course won't always be centered when using different size screens. So the first task is to find the screen size of the system; there may be a direct PythonCard way to do that, but I don't know it - so I used the wx calls. Once you have that, you can simply set self.position accordingly - note the value you set is the top left of the window - so some quick math and you're done. >from wxPython.wx import * > >class MyBackground(model. Background): > > def on_initialize(self, event): > xScreen = wxSystemSettings_GetMetric(wxSYS_SCREEN_X) > yScreen = wxSystemSettings_GetMetric(wxSYS_SCREEN_Y) > xSize, ySize = self.size > xPos = (xScreen-xSize)/2 > yPos = (yScreen-ySize)/2 > self.position = (xPos,yPos) > print self.size, self.position > pass -- Alex. |

The installation instructions on the main site assume that if you're using Panther then you'll just be using Apple's standard Python 2.3 install. I think this issue with Fink is probably a FAQ, so maybe ask on the pythonmac-sig mailing list? I'm guessing that you need to specify the right Python when you do your wxPython and PythonCard installs. On my machine, that is /usr/bin/python which is a symlink. Don't forget to run wxPython and PythonCard apps with pythonw, that's /usr/bin/pythonw. ka |

The only way to do this AFAIK is to catch one of the key events such as keyPress and if you are over the max length, don't add the character. You could also catch the textUpdate event, which might be better since it should handle paste operations as well. ka |

The runOptionsDialog.py file was in PythonCard/tools/codeEditor/modules and was moved to PythonCard/templates/dialogs so it could be shared. The associated resource file was also moved. The current import line is... from PythonCard.templates.dialogs import runOptionsDialog which is also used in the resourceEditor and tabcodeEditor. Do both of those programs exhibit the same problem? Does this problem only occur after editing or running a specific file? ka |

Good Morning; I am using OS X 10.3.6 with Pythoncard 0.8.1 and when I try to select Run Options under the File menu nothing occurs. Upon checking the console window I see the msg. IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3/lib/python2.3/site- packages/PythonCard/tools/codeEditor/runOptionsDialog.rsrc.py' And upon checking i do not find this file. Thoughts, ideas, suggestions or is this simply something that is not yet totally implemented - although I "thought" that on checking this when first getting pythoncard up and running that this did work. Could be just my memory. Thanks Jay Mutter jm...@ua... |

Usage: resource.py yourresourcefile.rsrc.py #!/usr/bin/python2.3 import sys #from PythonCardPrototype import res from PythonCard import resource def GetResourceImports(rsrcFileName): rsrcImports =3D [] builtinimport =3D __builtins__.__dict__['__import__'] def wrapimport(name, globals, locals, fromlist): rsrcImports.append((name, fromlist)) return apply(builtinimport, (name, globals, locals, fromlis= t)) __builtins__.__dict__['__import__'] =3D wrapimport rsrcFile =3D resource.ResourceFile(rsrcFileName) rsrc =3D rsrcFile.getResource() # revert to old import __builtins__.__dict__['__import__'] =3D builtinimport return rsrcImports def importcommand(name, fromlist): # """returns a string containing a command to import the module refer= red to by name, fromlist""" # either it's a tuple: import stuff from a module if type(fromlist) =3D=3D tuple: return "from "+name+" import "+",".join(fromlist) # or it's a import from a package elif type(fromlist) =3D=3D list: namelist =3D name.split('.') prefixlen =3D len(fromlist) for n in range(prefixlen): if fromlist[n] !=3D namelist[n]: prefixlen =3D n break if prefixlen =3D=3D 0: return "import "+name else: # if prefixlen>1, we have a problem... return "from "+".".join(namelist[:prefixlen])+" impor= t "+".".join(namelist[prefixlen:]) # or it's just a simple import else: return "import "+name def tryimports(imports): print "import traceback" # for handling errors for name, fromlist in imports: # print name, fromlist print "try:" print " ",importcommand(name, fromlist) print "except ImportError:" print " traceback.print_exc()" if __name__ =3D=3D '__main__': rsrcFileName =3D sys.argv[1] imports =3D GetResourceImports(rsrcFileName) if '--allcomponents' in sys.argv: tryimports(imports) else: # by default, handle PythonCard component imports print "#!/usr/bin/python2.2" print ''' """This file was autogenerated by resimports.py to import all the PythonCard components referred to by %s This is useful in generating dependencies for an installer """ ''' % rsrcFileName for name, fromlist in imports: if fromlist =3D=3D ['components']: print importcommand("PythonCardPrototype."+name= , ['PythonCardPrototype']+fromlist) Jonathan Papageorgiou |---------+--------------------------------------------> | | Gregory Pi=F1ero | | | <gre...@gm...> | | | Sent by: | | | pyt...@li...ur| | | ceforge.net | | | | | | | | | 12/01/2004 04:11 PM | | | Please respond to Gregory Pi=F1ero | | | | |---------+--------------------------------------------> >--------------------------------------------------------------------= ----------------------------------------------------------| | = | | To: Ruben Marquez <rmc...@ya...> = | | cc: pyt...@li... = | | Subject: Re: [Pythoncard-users] Using py2exe with pythoncard= | >--------------------------------------------------------------------= ----------------------------------------------------------| Wow it finally worked! Thanks! I just had to add: from PythonCard.components import button, image, staticbox, statictext, textarea, textfield Though I'm slightly dissapointed it didn't make just one big exe file, but rather a whole folder of junk. In the wxPython demo I see that the DirDialog has a button that allows the creation of a new folder. Is there a way to get that buton on the dir dialog in PythonCard? I didn't see it in the docs. -Ruben __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Take Yahoo! Mail with you! Get it on your mobile phone. http://mobile.yahoo.com/maildemo |

Maybe in the future py2exe will allow to create real single file executables for simple cases (not too many python extension modules), but it will probably never happen for wxPython apps, where the wxPython dll (dlls?) are needed as well. OTOH, there's a recipe in the py2exe wiki which creates a single exe-file which at runtime unpacks all the stuff, and cleans up afterwards. Personally, I never found that very nice. Norman, Now, now, don't attribute to me what I didn't say. ;) But, as far as your dissapointment goes, just make sure you read the py2exe documentation thoroughly. I don't think they lie about what it can and can not do. And, furthemore, you may be surprised about what it can actually do. :) -Ruben --- normanwinn <nor...@on...> wrote: > Ruben Marquez wrote: > > > >Though I'm slightly dissapointed it didn't make > just one big exe file, > >but rather a whole folder of junk. Gregory, I know, there is a lot to take in when you are getting started. Note that Kevin said: "You need to specifically import the component modules that you use in your resource file" What that means is that, when using py2exe, you have to explicitly import each component that you use in your app individually. In other words, it is not enough to do: from PythonCard import model, dialog, etc... In addition to that, you need to do: from PythonCard.components import button, radiogroup, etc... -Ruben __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Read only the mail you want - Yahoo! Hey Kevin, I'm still getting a new problem now. Per your example I changed my setup file to: from distutils.core import setup import py2exe setup( name =3D "JobRater", console =3D ["JobRater.py"], data_files =3D [ (".", ["JobRater.rsrc.py"]) ] ) Now I'm getting this error when I try to run it: Traceback (most recent call last): File "JobRater.py", line 65, in ? File "PythonCard\model.pyc", line 329, in __init__ File "PythonCard\resource.pyc", line 48, in getResource File "PythonCard\resource.pyc", line 86, in __init__ File "PythonCard\resource.pyc", line 91, in __init__ File "PythonCard\resource.pyc", line 91, in __init__ File "PythonCard\resource.pyc", line 96, in __init__ File "PythonCard\resource.pyc", line 139, in enforceSpec File "PythonCard\resource.pyc", line 30, in loadComponentModule ImportError: cannot import module 'button Any ideas?
