I get a very similar error traceback when trying to launch Resource Editor with Python 2.4.x on Mac OS 10.4. As a result, I've had to stick with using Python 2.3.5 with PythonCard. I'm using a modified version of PythonCard .82 from CVS. The only modification is that it prints wx.VERSION and wx.PlatformInfo. I get the following error message when I try to run PythonCard's CodeEditor. Python23.dll not found. Python23.dll is not installed in my Windows\system32 sub directory. Instead my installation uses the Python24.dll. Pertinent system information is: Windows XP, Python version 2.4.1, Python runs and reports it is version 2.4.1, Shortcut for CodeEdior is C:\Python24\Pythonw.exe C:\Python24\lib\site-packages\PythonCard\tools\codeEditor\codeEditor.py, and yes PythonCard is installed in a Python24 sub directory. According to the book "Beginning Python" page 606 PythonCard will work with version 2.4 of Python even though the source forge installation instructions are written for Python version 2.3. Hence I am mystified as to why I get his Pyhonn23.dll not found error message. Does anybody have any helpful hints? Thanks in advance for your help, Howard R. Hansen |

I don't know that much about the internals of rpm, or the lsb and all it wonderful promises, but it appears that Python comes in an rpm named python-base for Mandrake. So this Mandrake PythonCard rpm (you can tell it's for Mandrake because of the mdk in the filename) apparently depends on this python-base rpm. From the list of python rpms you provided for your SuSE system, you do not have an rpm named python-base installed. My guess is SuSE just called their rpm python, which is in your list (python-2.4-14). This is probably why the Mandrake rpm is not working for you. I would suggest installing it from source or figuring out how to package a proper SuSE rpm. You could also try rpm -i --nodeps PythonCard-0.8.1-1mdk.noarch.rpm, but in my experience that never works out very well. Bryan |

Thanks for replying. The rpms were made for any distro that uses Redhat's Package Manager. The Pythoncard web site includes install instructions for both Mandrake and Redhat (Fedora). So, in principle, the installation of Pythoncard should work if the distro uses the package manager and the Linux Standard Base. But as the failed dependency message below would seem to indicate, the command <rpm -i PythonCard-0.8.1-1mdk.noarch.rpm>, doesn't know how to find software that is clearly on my system. If you have Python 2.3.x or higher and a get wxPython 2.5.2.8 or higher (wxPython 2.6.x preferred) then you can simply download the tar.gz file or zip or get PythonCard from cvs. If you're able to run the wxPython demo, PythonCard should work too once you have it installed. Python simply needs to be able to find PythonCard on its path, so running the following command in the PythonCard directory after it has been uncompressed will install it into the Lib/site-packages directory of the version of Python you installed it with. python setup.py install Alternatively, you can put the PythonCard directory in the directory that is part of your PYTHONPATH environment variable, which is typically used if you are working from a version updated regularly from cvs. Any package or module found on the PYTHONPATH will be used before a version found on the normal sys.path. You can check your path by starting the python interpreter and then entering >>> import sys >>> sys.path ka |

You are trying to install a Mandrake rpm on a SuSE system. I don't know that much about how rpm works deep down, but it's probably looking for a Mandrake python package in order to fullfill dependencies. It is possible to tell rpm to install something ignoring dependencies, but I'm not so sure this is a good idea. Bryan |

Hello Everyone: Finally we ended the Spanish traslation of the Walk-Throughs. You can check the docs in: http://pythonmexico.org/ http://pythonmexico.org/index_html/doc/PythonCard/walkthrough1.html http://pythonmexico.org/index_html/doc/PythonCard/walkthrough2.html http://pythonmexico.org/index_html/doc/PythonCard/walkthrough3.html As with any document, we are still checking them for typos or something like that. Maybe you want to host it into the PythonCard site. If so, just tell me and I'll send you the sources. Greetings César ___________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Fixed in resourceEditor.py v 1.221 2005/05/17 - so if you have, or get, a version from CVS later than that, it should be OK. > Furthermore, when double clicking (on a word in) a text field or a > button, the property editor becomes unresponsive: dragging inside it > has the effect that the text field (button) in the application's > window moves! I fixed a PythonCard bug which had various symptoms *like* this, but I don't remember seeing exactly this problem. That also is fixed in CVS during May this year. Fixed in resourceEditor.py v 1.220 2005/05/13 You can get PythonCard from anonymous CVS - see the instructions at http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=19015 Thanks Roger - even though these were already known and fixed, it's great to receive problem reports ! -- Alex Tweedly http://www.tweedly.net -- No virus found in this outgoing message. PythonCard version: 0.8.1 wxPython version: 2.6.1.0 Python version: 2.4.1 (#65, Mar 30 2005, 09:13:57) [MSC v.1310 32 bit (Intel)] Platform: win32 Following walkthrough2.html, I get strange behaviour in the resource editor when resizing a text field. Especially when dragging the middle right resize grip, and moving left to decrease the size of the field, it gets about twice as wide. Also, try dragging the resize grip left, right, left, which has'interesting' effects. Furthermore, when double clicking (on a word in) a text field or a button, the property editor becomes unresponsive: dragging inside it has the effect that the text field (button) in the application's window moves! Only after right-clicking in the application's window and then left-clicking gets me back in a normal state (or switching to another application and back again) |

The Background class contains the method def on_exit_command(self, evt): self.exit() and the resources were all changed to use a command named "exit" so you don't have to define this yourself, plus any buttons you want to create that mimic a File->Exit menu can just use an "exit" command as well for free. For example, in minimal.rsrc.py and most of the other samples and templates... { 'type':'MenuItem', 'name':'menuFileExit', 'label':'E&xit\tAlt+X', 'command':'exit' } ] } So this part of the walkthrough can be ignored. ka |
