There is a known 'problem' with the consumer Windows (95, 98, ME?) when trying to use popen if you have a version of Norton Antivirus (2 I think) running. Basically they fall over each other and the observed result is a big fat zero. I'd turn off NAV if you are running it and try again. IIRC an alternative solution is to upgrade to a later version of NAV. Of course, if our user isn't running NAV them I'm stumped too as everything works fine on my Win98 box.
