Truly this isn't a trivial change on my part, and applying it to code
that's since been refactored wouldn't be easy.  I'm glad you see where I
was trying to go with this and that you think this is useful work.

If you guys are near a major release I'd wait until after the release to
try and merge in my things, unless there's some great demand for it.

Glad all that work wasn't for nothing,
