You should install the ``dpkg-dev`` and ``fakeroot`` packages, and once
you have the three source files of the PyTables Debian package, just
``dpkg-source -x python-tables_....dsc``, enter the newly created
directory and ``dpkg-buildpackage -b -rfakeroot``.  You may need to
install additional development packages.  Once you are done, you will
get the nice *.deb packages ready to install with ``dpkg -i``.  You can
