Actually pedigree files must contains animal identities
expressed as numbers. But animals identities can be
also expressed as strings.

The feature I require is the capability to manage
litteral pedigrees.

    I think that this is as simple as:

    animalID = str(hash(<name>))

    I do see one potential problem: if spaces are specified as a
    delimiter then any name that includes a space, such as 'John
    Smith', will cause problems. Enclosing the name in quote
    marks will not help that problem. Of course, if you are
    reading from GEDCOM or an XML format then that is not an
    issue. For my purposes -- I like to work with flat text
    files -- I can just use comma-separated columns.

    This has been implemented via the A, S, and D pedigree
    format strings.
