I wouldn't be too surprised to see this fail. Extensions of this type
(ones which require communication/coordination between the server and
client side) require extensions to the GLX protocol to support remoting
of the operation. I'd have thought that shaders would be a pretty
straightforward one compared to e.g. VBOs, but that doesn't mean its
necessarily been implemented yet... here's a forum post from last year

that's obviously rather old, but it would seem to match your experience.
