Gee I'm beginning to sound repetitive today... OpenGLContext has code for rendering 3D fonts using TrueType font outlines extracted directly from .ttf files using FontTools and TTFQuery. This works on Linux and Windows (should work anywhere, since there's no system dependencies other than the code for *finding* system .ttf files). It could use a better algorithm for choosing a *default* font (it will often choose a font that doesn't have any of the ASCII glyphs when on Linux). That shouldn't be a problem if you have a *particular* font you intend to use. You can also use PyGame anti-aliased bitmap fonts.
