wrls/3shapes.wrl demonstrates the problem. After a few
orbits the IFS box entirely disappears. No clue why.

Okay, this appears to be fixed by the texture+transparent
fix I just checked in. There's still what looks like a
problem with the specular calculations, but I can't actually
tell if it's a problem or just a natural result of
specularity applied to both interior and exterior surfaces
of the sphere.
