Are you registering the defaults?  I.e.:

NSUserDefaults.standardUserDefaults().registerDefaults_(NSDictionary.dic 
tionaryWithContentsOfFile_(NSBundle.mainBundle().pathForResource_ofType_ 
("defaults", "plist")))
