I'd just like to mention that MS has also released a free version of their compiler (just the command line tools, no IDE): http://msdn.microsoft.com/visualc/vctoolkit2003/ However, I believe it won't help you compiling Python modules for the official Python binary as that one was compiled with VC6 and the above toolkit is newer (but I've never tried it myself as we have VC6 here).
