many thanks for your fast reply! Version 5.5.4 was the latest version of the official ubuntu repo.

now, I installed version 5.9.2 from sourceforge and it works perfect. The spectrum is updated automatically.

Dear David,

Please make sure you are using the latest version of PyMca.

I do not claim the problem will be gone, but I recall to have dealt with that issue quite long time ago.
