pyQW

Rob

pyQW is a python script for calculating the properties of a finite quantum well such as those made from GaAs/AlGaAs. It uses an analytical model so it is not very extensible but it makes accurate plots of simple quantum wells and their wavefunctions. There is also a pdf which documents the theory used.

pyQW will calculate

  • the energy levels for a simple potential well
  • the Fermi level for a given doping and temperature
  • the dipole matrix elements of the transitions
  • the effective length of the transitions
  • the plasma frequency and transition frequencies of the transitions

It doesn't

  • calculate the effect of non-parabolicity or use advanced k.p models
  • calculate the effect of the charges on the bandstructure (Poisson effects).
  • include the effects of strain.
  • calculate the effect of the interactions between the different transitions.
