Ok, I found the option to set Mark Occurrences on under Preferences 
->Pydev Extensions.

However, ....

The following sequence:

1.  Select a word
2.  Rename Occurrence
3.  Type something new and then change your mind - hit ESC
4.  The new text remains everywhere AND if you select it so that you can 
change it back again then neither Mark Occurrences or Rename Occurrences 
works on it.
5. Ctrl-Z does not back things out back either.
