Right, I've got trackbacks, counts, and RSS feeds of trackbacks displaying OK in the code in CVS. You can't post trackbacks yet, although that's not so urgent as all they seem to be doing on pycs.net is increasing the amount of spam :-) Cheers, Phil |

Hey all, I've just checked in code to move the users and mirroredPosts database tables over to Postgres, to use psycopg instead of bpgsql, and to completely disable MetaKit. This brings the memory footprint on pycs.net WAY down - like from 500 MB down to 20 MB :-) This also means that accessRestrictions and trackbacks are currently not working. I plan to fix trackbacks soon, but I can't be bothered doing accessRestrictions, as I don't use them. So be warned... if your access restrictions are important, don't upgrade! Georg, did you ever upgrade to a Postgres+MetaKit version of PyCS, or are you still using the old MK-only one? Cheers, Phil |

Right now all it does is: - not display the 'add comment' form and - not let you post comments for postids under that user's blog. As there may be existing comments, I would recommend rendering comment links anyway, unless the user has chosen to disable comments. Cheers, Phil |

Ah, yes, there are some interesting rules about what gets shown and what doesn't. When I moved it all over to SQL I tried to replicate what Georg had done before, but I'm not sure if I got it quite right. > Quick note (not much research..) > > I was surprised to see that there are a number of > search entries not listed in the search word hit: > > http://www.pycs.net/system/searches.py?usernum=24&group=default&order=time ... which does this query: "SELECT hit_time, referrer, hit_count, search_engine, search_term FROM pycs_referrers WHERE usernum=%d AND usergroup=%s AND is_search_engine='t' ORDER BY "+order_criteria+" DESC LIMIT 100", (usernum, group) (order_criteria is either 'hit_time', 'hit_count' or 'referrer'). > Which were in the exhaustive referral list: > http://www.pycs.net/system/referers.py?usernum=24&group=default&order=time&full=1 ... which does this query: "SELECT hit_time, referrer, hit_count FROM pycs_referrers WHERE usernum=%d AND usergroup=%s "+search_criteria+" ORDER BY "+order_criteria+" DESC LIMIT 100", (usernum, group) (order_criteria is as above, and search_criteria is blank for full=1 or when there are less than 30 search engine hits, otherwise "AND is_search_engine='f'") > At first I thought it was due to obscure search engine > results, but now see that google referrals are also > missed. > > Folks DO come to my site for more than Rutabagas! ;-) Interesting... I can't see why you would be missing Google results unless the counter isn't properly setting is_search_engine when it gets them. Hmm. Can you point out one for me where there's a result on the referrers page but not on the searches page? > p.s. Thanks Phil for the Adsense option. Oops - looks like the anti-spam stuff I put in the other day actually completely stopped all comments from showing. They were still being saved, but the is_spam value in the database was NULL rather than 0, so the "is_spam=0" comparison was always failing! I've fixed this in CVS now, so if you have already updated to the new code that uses Postgres for comments, please update again so you get this fix. BTW I have a bulk spam-deletion script that you might like if you run a public site - I'll put it in CVS if anyone wants it. Cheers, Phil :) |

Quick note (not much research..) I was surprised to see that there are a number of search entries not listed in the search word hit: http://www.pycs.net/system/searches.py?usernum=24&group=default&order=time Which were in the exhaustive referral list: http://www.pycs.net/system/referers.py?usernum=24&group=default&order=time&full=1 At first I thought it was due to obscure search engine results, but now see that google referrals are also missed. If you aren't interested yourself, it would be nice if you could link to his post so he can find someone to take them off his hands before they expire! Cheers, Phil ----- Forwarded message from robert <ro...@zo...> ----- [...] Do you know anyone that might be interested in a matching set of domains? I have three that will expire in May. I am looking for someone who is working with Python, Plone or Zope. If they have an open-source project that is active I will gladly renew them for another year and transfer ownership of the domains over to them. The domains are: zythonics.com zythonics.net zythonics.org I made a post on my mozkit.net ( http://mozkit.net/journal/index.php?id=13 ) weblog announcing the giveaway, but, so far, no one has shown any interest. OK, I've checked in my changes to comments, so now the next time you update and restart your PyCS server, it will copy all your comments from your MK DB into your PG DB. Check your etc.log to make sure that nothing bad happens during this process; I'm not entirely sure how error-tolerant it is. It seems to handle the utf-8 comments in my DB OK, but watch out for them, because they seem to be the biggest causes of errors. So...if you want to start playing with the DB now and putting in new features, go ahead! Remember that if you want to change the structure of the DB (add new tables etc), you should do it in pycs_db.py and increment the DB version number after you do it, so everyone else will get the changes too. Hi Georg, All good ideas, yes. My thoughts so far have been along the lines of your last point: > Another idea might be to make use of the fact that we run several blogs on > the community server and keep a global storage of IPs whose comments went > into the moderation queue and to check first against that to allow other > blogs to benefit from each others. > > I don't think it would be a good idea to build this on the old metakit based > version, so how is the status on the PostgreSQL stuff? Is the current > version fully migrated? I haven't touched comments, but the code is all ready for anyone else to do that, if you're interested :-) There's a file somewhere (forgotten the name - but grep for CREATE TABLE and you'll get it) that upgrade the Postgres DB to the latest format and copies data over from the Metakit DB... Hi! Recently comment spam showed up in several blogs on pycs.net, so I think it might be time to do something against it. It's not a simple thing and there are no bulletproff ways, but I fear if we don't start to address this, it will only become even more ugly. A first take could make use of ideas from the OSA plugin for WordPress: - a comment form carries two hidden fields: the IP and the timestamp of the requester, both encoded. - a comment POST request must carry those two hidden fields with it - the IP of the POST request must be identical to the IP of the GET on the comment form - the POST must come in some predefined timeframe with regard to the GET (3 sec min to 10 min max is OSA default) - the POST must come with a referrer that points to the GET And some other checks that make sense, I think: - the comment mustn't contain more than 2 URLs - the IP shouldn't have more than 5 comments in a given timeframe (1 Minute?) If a comment doesn't match those requirements, it should be set to be moderated. Moderated comments should only show to the logged-in admin and should allow either to accept or reject the comment. Maybe add a checkbox "accept/reject all from the same IP" to allow mass deletion. Comment feeds maybe can show the to-be-moderated comments, too - but only if the user gives the password in the URL with an additional parameter, so feedster and friends (who happily spider comment feeds) won't show them. So the user needs to fetch the full feed with password to get a notion on what comments need to be moderated - maybe we can set up an alternative moderated-comment-feed, too. Additionally trackbacks should go into the moderation queue directly until someone figures out a better way to filter those that doesn't just use keywords. Another idea might be to make use of the fact that we run several blogs on the community server and keep a global storage of IPs whose comments went into the moderation queue and to check first against that to allow other blogs to benefit from each others. I don't think it would be a good idea to build this on the old metakit based version, so how is the status on the PostgreSQL stuff? Is the current version fully migrated? bye, Georg |

Hi all, If you update from CVS now, you'll get the new PostgreSQL stuff -- your PyCS will connect to a local postgres server to store referrers etc. You'll need to edit your pycs.conf file to let it know where the server is living: see pycs.conf.default in the source for more info. TAKE CARE, THOUGH -- this isn't tested all that much yet. I was about to run it on pycs.net, but then found that my postgres setup was a bit broken, and reverted it. More later! If you want to get the code right before any postgres stuff made it in, do this: cvs update -r PRE_POSTGRES Cheers, Phil :) |

Hi all, I think I cracked the pycs.net slowness issue -- the problem was not actually to do with the PyCS code, but rather that mysql was taking a really long time to process some topic exchange requests, and that was holding up the whole machine. Apache was spawning the max number of children, all of which were waiting for mysql, and all the Apache and Python processes were using all the machine's memory, so it started swapping, and made everything even worse. Now I've added a key in the right place and mysql and the topic exchange are zipping along happily, so with any luck everything else should be OK too. Tell me if you see any more serious slowdowns like this... Cheers, Phil |
